Not only did he get stopped by Binningron on a great chance…
he lost the face off to McDavid… then skated away from McDavid to chase the puck and left him wide open between the circles for the game winner.
Did you notice the play in OT when Canada nearly was called for too many men on ice?
They wisely didn’t play the puck as it was sent through all of the changing players… but even though Canada purposely didn’t play the puck… USA was called for icing the puck.
Terrible call by the linesman.

Funny that NHL fans were shitting on this tournament before it started (Money grab, meaningless, why in the middle of the season etc.) yet it turned out to be the best thing the NHL has cranked out in years.

Such a bad call, icing is supposed to be waved when D pinch on a forward or pass on playing an easy to play puck

Did you watch the first period?
Canada could have been up by three. Hellebucyk kept them in early.
Overall, Canada produced more quality scoring chances through the game. But yeah, during that one stretch, Billington stood on his head and because it was kept close the USA had a real shot to win it in the third or OT.

I did not watch the whole game. I saw what looked like a pretty soft goal by the USA goalie on a shot by MacKinnon. It’s the goalies job to track pucks like that. You give up 3 of those and you generally get pulled. And the OT was all USA. Canada I think scored on their first real chance of OT.

The beginning of the game was the opposite of the end.
Very even through three periods, but I’d give the edge on total scoring chances narrowly to Canada.
Both goalies were excellent.

This angle shows how difficult it would have been to see the puck… considering that we can’t even see Hellebuyck.

Considering all these guys are 6 foot 4 or more with skates on and tons of equipment. Amazing that goalies can see anything.

Yeah, there is always excuses. When you score on long floaters with a screen, you could score all the time if that was a high percentage play. And 4 of those are USA players so they should be getting out of the way so the goalie can see the shot. I wasn’t impressed. He had no idea where the puck was.

He’s barely above the top of the circle…
and a quick wrister is far more difficult for a screened goalie to even see when the shot is released.
As for the USA players “getting out of the way”…
there isn’t a lot of movement possible in less than 1 second.
A quick “floater” from ~ 40 feet still gets to the net in about 1/2 a second.
If you actually watch watch the other plays are doing on that play… Harley makes a subtle and smart move after he passes to Mackinnon… taking a few hard strides to “replce” Mackinnon as he moved to the top of circle. Harley’s movement forced the USA coverage to briefly overlap on Mackinnon.
Mackinnon’s movement to the middle of ice also drew both defensemen to cover each side of Reinhardt at the front of net… trying to prevent a tip play.
It was a good hockey play.

It’s not a high percentage play, but the mantra in tight games is to keep throwing the puck at the net. Good things will happen, screens, deflections, rebounds…
As Gretzky once said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
Can’t call this a soft goal on the part of the goaltender. Zero percent his fault, really.
