Reynolds had the best year I’ve ever seen him have. And obviously I’ve followed him since his rookie year with the Rams. For me I’m letting the guy walk unless he wants a exceptionally cheap contract. He frustrated us Rams fans with ill timely drops. His hands got better in Detroit but those drops in the playoffs were vintage Reynolds. There’s a reason he was a mid season drop by the Titans and the Rams had no interest in bringing him back. The “dog” factor isn’t there and McVay and Vabrel saw that in my opinion.
Not knocking him but he is what he is. Again, he’s a solid depth option and a really solid/good number 4 who can be a spot starter if other guys are injured. But his career production is what it is. He’s not a ideal starter.
For a reciever of his size he plays small. Plus I’d add “dogs” usually won’t be seen laughing after big drops in the biggest games. I’ve never seen Kupp laugh after a drop. Usually he’s pretty upset/distraught.
Been watching Reynolds since day uno. I don’t see it. Serviceable depth guy at best in my opinion.
I said ealier in this thread…Reynolds played the best season I’ve seen him ever have. And still he barely eclipsed 600 yards in a 17 game season. He started off pretty well then cooled down as the year went.
This is my opinion. I think its okay bring Josh back as cheap depth/insurance even over DPJ. But I really do think Detroit needs a bonafide number 2 reciever. One that puts up true reciever #2 production (800/900) yards territory.
From the way that they talk about him in the building it’s pretty clear that they love the work ethic, the toughness, the way he grinds… that’s what I think of by “dog.”
He’s a JAG as starting WRs go but that simply is bc he’s just not a top tier athletic talent.
He’s a big target. He’s tough. He has for the most part been dependable. Jared loves and trusts him.
It’s my preference to move on from him but I can see this going either way. And if he is retained it’s those sort of qualities that most are referring to when they call a guy a “dog”.
Fair enough. For me I don’t put him in that category. He’s let me down as a Ram and now as a Lion. I’m just over it. I hated seeing SF win. Being from the Bay originally I know too many Niner fans and I hate them. And the Lions losing that game hurt. But like I said if Reynolds is#4 on depth chart then gravy. If he’s top 3 I’m not necessarily loving it.
I think Brad’s comment about “bringing in new competition” was aimed at position groups like the WR room. As I piece everything together, it would make sense to dump an alpha dog into that group.
Amon-Ra has been a godsend. But he was a 4th round pick that paved his own way. Jamo was a 1st rounder, but he was injured when he came in…then suspended…and has had a specialized role. Jamo is the only real committment of resources that the team has made at the WR position, with the 4th round pick used on Amon-Ra being second. Josh Reynolds is a cast-off. He signed a dirt cheap deal with the Titans after the Rams didn’t want him anymore. The Titans gave up on him after half of a season. Our next receiver is Kalif Raymond. He was another cast-off. We are his 5th team, and the only one that has used him as a WR on purpose.
I love having every single one of those guys, and I love their background stories. Those players helped build our identity and I will never forget them. However, I could fully understand if Brad decides its time to drop a bomb on that group. Its time.
Reynolds was #4 in targets on the team. Of the top 7 in targets on the team, the other 6 are already on the roster for 2024.
I’d expect Detroit to allow Reynolds & his agent to explore his options in free agency. I would like to think Reynolds would like to stay and would be willing to take a slightly lesser offer to stay but at the end of the day, some other team may value him more than what we can afford to pay a #4 in targets guy.
I see what you’re saying, but hear me out. Can we change the drops vs. SF? No. Did they hurt like hell? Absolutely. But let’s say we disclude the playoffs. He drops to 4.2% for the regular season, right up there with LaPorta and I don’t remember Josh dropping more than LaPorta. SLP had a few dropsies games late in the season.
DPJ has GREAT hands and can make those tough catches that even laporta drops. I’m sure he could deliver those same 3rd down catches if given the same opportunity as Reynolds.
I agree he LOOKS slow but he’s a long strider. If you watch his highlights you can see him easily outrunning people on punt return even though it looks like he’s sloshing.
Remember Josh was hurt in the second half, plus thr light went on with Jamo.
We need Leaf and Josh to be ok splitting WR3 duty, and being paid commensurately. Josh at age 29 proba ly isnt going to get big offers, but should get 2 year deals that we can compete with if not exactly match.
This is what people mean when they say JREY doesn’t have that DAWG in him. I’m sure there’s a lil chihuahua in everyone but we need real dogs not ones who are gonna piss on the porch.
