Freep: The Bengals passed on drafting Penei Sewell, and Detroit Lions have thrived ever since

He’s a great player for sure. The Bengals bungled by not addressing the Oline first before buying their shiny new toys. Like buying a Lamborghini before building the garage and it’s rusting out in the driveway. .

I honestly never thought Sewell would last to us.

Do you all recall that Detroit tried to trade up to both ATL and CIN to take Sewell. He was the top guy on our board. No one would trade with us.

Everyone knew 3 QBs were going 1-3.

ATL at 4 wanted Pitts so bad they couldn’t see past it. There were some posters who really wanted him to. I think Pitts is another example as to why you do not take TE’s that high. The value just isn’t there.

I really thought CIN would take Sewell. I really did so I was wondering Chase or Slater and I was leaning towards Chase myself.

MIA was locked into Waddle like ATL was Pitts. Everyone knew it.

Thinking back on what we know now. I think if Cincy had taken Sewell that we would have taken Slater.

Yet Stafford in 12 seasons only missed games in 4 of them.

Stafford was healthier than Burrow.

There were a couple of outliers, but the vast majority didn’t. We had just taken Hockenson top 10 a couple of years earlier.

The latest andrew luck?

And I really want to thank the 49ers for taking Trey Lance.
And the Seahawks for taking Devon Witherspoon.
Still bitter about J. Carter though.
And that 2024 draft. That was a stinker.

Looking back that 2924 draft was horrible.

The only picks that are contributing anything at all are the first and last pick.

At least we did get 2 starters out of it.

Confusious say: One man trash is other man treasure

Didn’t Brad try to trade up for Chase? Why is no one talking about this?

But did he, really?

You are correct. I had forgotten about that. So glad Atlanta was asking too high of a price for the number four pick. I would take Sewell 10 times out of 10 over Ja’Marr Chase. Not saying Ja’Marr isn’t a great player, but Penei is a generational talent. Perhaps one of the greatest OLmen of all time. Plus, offensive lineman tend to last longer than wide receivers. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Regardless, they wound up with one of the best OT’s in the game, and one of the best WR’s in the game in that draft. Chase is crazy, but I personally am all about the trenches. And if they got Chase who knows if they would have picked ARSB. Things worked out for the better.

Sometimes those oops moments turn out to be better. And i know they loved Sewell and couldn’t believe he was there.

You can’t be as good as Brad has been without a little bit of luck. In 2022 I was so upset he traded up for Jamo instead of Jordan Davis or Kyle Hamilton. But Alim worked out, and Kerby is arguably the best. Then the insane 2023 draft when they managed to get BB.

2024 looks like a bust right now, but we’ll see. It gets harder when you’re great team needing to make moves in hopes of getting some gems. So, I don’t blame it.

Holmes “might” try to trade up…yea sure, the entire article is speculation and nothing specific

ESPN reported Wednesday the Lions “tried to trade up to No. 4 to get” LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase last week, but the Atlanta Falcons’ asking price was too high.

A high-ranking NFL executive told the Free Press previously that he expected the Lions to take Chase if Chase made it to No. 7, a sentiment that Chase’s former high school coach, Jay Roth, also shared with the Free Press.

LSU receiver Ja'Marr Chase in the College Football Playoff national championship game Jan. 13, 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“That’s just my personal opinion,” Roth said. “Again personally, I think that if the (Cincinnati) Bengals don’t take a lineman (at No. 5) they’re taking Chase, and if they do take a lineman then he’s going to fall to you guys.”

Yeah, I’m not sure if it’s exactly true. Holmes would never admit it. But there are several articles alluding to that was the case. In the end, I’m happy it all worked out for us.
