When Cincinnati was on the clock at No. 5, Sewell expected his phone to ring.

“You just have that feeling when something’s about to happen or you’re about to get a call of some sort, so you just have that anticipation,” he told the Free Press. “But, yeah, it never came.”

The Bengals passed on Sewell to take wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, reuniting the pass catcher with his college quarterback. And while Chase has developed into one of the NFL’s best receivers, that decision helped the Detroit Lions land one of the cornerstones of a rebuild that has made them one of the best teams in football.

“This is where I was meant to be from draft day on,” Sewell said.

“I still believe he’s just scratched the surface of where he can go,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. "I think the guy’s, he’s special. But I go back to this, yeah, he’s got ability. God gave him some rare ability and size and length and all that. This guy busts his tail, man. He works. He works. Every day in practice, he works his craft. He doesn’t take plays off, and it’s no wonder he’s become the player that he has.”

For that, the Lions owe the Bengals a debt of gratitude, in the same way they owe the Jaguars for passing on Aidan Hutchinson with the first pick of the 2022 draft.

Sewell was exactly the type of player, at exactly the right position they needed to jumpstart their franchise, and looking back there’s no way he should have made it to the Lions at No. 7 – or the Bengals at No. 5, for that matter – even in a loaded draft.

“He is a pillar of the team,” Lions left tackle Taylor Decker said. “Nobody’s arguing that he’s not one of the best linemen in the NFL. The guy’s a superstar. He can do everything we ask him to do and he allows us to be a lot more multiple. So I feel like if you can get an elite lineman there’s not much more that you want other than that. Maybe the only other position would be a quarterback or an edge rusher that’s right up there with it, but if you can get an elite tackle like that and who pretty much out of the gate is top of his game, I mean, he’s a generational player.”

Decker said he paid close attention to the 2021 draft after Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley called to let him know the Lions planned to take Sewell if he slipped to their pick.

Fraley told Decker the team had no intention of having him change positions. Decker appreciated the advance notice. And Decker and Sewell are in their fifth year together of bookending one of the league’s best offensive lines.

“Penei has been everything the Lions ever needed at that position,” said defensive tackle Alim McNeill, one of Sewell’s 2021 draft classmates. “I don’t say left or right tackle, Penei is just an offensive lineman. You could put Penei at guard and it’s going to be the same thing. Yeah, he’s absolutely been everything you would want in an offensive lineman, 10,000%. I couldn’t even imagine – if they did it again, the Lions is 1,000% picking Penei again. It’s not even a thought.”

Sewell said he feels fortunate the draft played out like it did

Playing for Campbell and Fraley and alongside Decker and his other linemates helped him quickly acclimate to the NFL, he said. And playing for the Lions has pushed him in his pursuit of greatness.

That’s exactly the sentiment of the Den at that time. The reactions of Brad and Dan during the dratted the Bengals drafted Chase said so and then when they actually drafted Penei at #7, they exploded even more. Somehow they understood that Miami at 6 was taking WR Waddle.

It’s likely the Lions would have chosen Chase, reducing their likelihood of drafting ARSB in the fourth round, who in my opinion is a top five wide receiver in the league. So with that one blunder (and it’s hard to call picking Ja’Marr Chase a blunder) it allowed the Detroit Lions to draft two superstars. Cincinnati did what Detroit used to do… pick the wrong guys for the wrong reasons. Chase does the Bengals no good if Joe Burrow’s is always snapped in half.

I loved the Sewell pick. I felt like we were gifted this guy… kinda like Hutch. Make no mistake, Chase wouldn’t have been a bad pick by any means. I just really liked Sewell that year.

And, Sewell has been transformational for our franchise. I never thought they would keep him on the right side, but once he got his steps down, he has been amazing.

Someone knew what they were talking about.

Unfortunately you need to update option B to show Burrow on crutches on the sideline while another Anybody gets sacked.

That was just so accurate.

You gotta feel for Burrow man. Such a talent going to rot in Cincy with a broken body because they refuse to keep him upright.

I remember that graph and it’s true. Brad and Dan were and still are “it starts with the line”, both offensively and defensively. It not just lip service.

The frenzy for QBs that year and Atlanta’s fixation on Kyle Pitts allowed the Lions to ride a perfect wave to Sewell. Brad is good, but he’s also been lucky, in this case and also with Hutch.

The Bengals wanted to make Burrow happy. I completely understand why Burrow would want to have his #1 receiver from college in the pros, and Chase is a terrific player. However, that was the moment that the organization needed to put what Burrow wanted aside and make the right choice for the franchise. It’s like letting a kid pick their own dinner and watching them eat cake and ice cream. The Bengals inadvertently made their franchise QB a part time player by putting him behind an offensive line that is damn near getting him killed.

But someday that first class organization called the Cincinnati Bengals will induct Burrow into their wall of fame. Travel and hotel accommodations will be on Joe’s dime just like they did Boomer. The Bengals are one big-time sphincter of an organization.

Not to mention Miami’s obsession with speed. Very few teams would have taken Waddle over Penei imo, thankfully Miami was one of them.

It sure seemed to this FanBoy that the Lions intel knew that Miami was taking speed in the form of Waddle. Therefore, the eruption after Cincy taking Chase.

We got a better player 106 picks after Waddle. And our guy blocks like nobody’s business.

Let’s not forget Bengals went to the Super Bowl and should have won if not for a bail out call on 4th down to LA a trophy :trophy: in their home stadium.

How we forget so soon in society

What have you done for me lately? Who wrote that article a woman I bet

Perhaps if they would’ve drafted Sewell and ARSB they’d be celebrating a couple of Super Bowl wins by now. We’ll never know. But I do know their offensive line keeps letting defenders blast Burrow into the next season year after year.

Chase was not a bad pick by the Bengals. In fact to me he’s the only one who still has an argument to go before Penei. Certainly Pitts, Waddle, Lance and Wilson shouldn’t have, and probably not Lawrence either.

Their problem is everything else they’ve done re: addressing their OL.

This instantly reminded me of Stafford. He got the shit beat out of him here in Detroit.
