Fun to look back at The reaction to drafting Gibbs vs how everyone thinks today

Dude Bromart is a bust and you know it. Anzalone is the coaches pet. And I’m older than I’ve ever been :joy: Manu was a wasted pick. Barnes should play more, I don’t care how injured his knee is. Get Jack Campbell off the field already!

Oh and Jamo is a thug!

Love the bongos!

I said he needed to get to 2000 yards from scrimmage to justify his draft position. He came pretty damn close to that.

I would be lying if I didn’t own that I had major “positional value” concerns at the time. I am happy to say that I have been proven totally wrong. I get that Brad is picking “football players” and some of the traditional assumptions are far less impactful. But I still believe that positional value has a place in the equation. It just isn’t the value that I placed upon it a handful of years ago.

I can also honestly state that I liked the players we drafted. I was always concerned that we would struggle to fill those roster spots for that were defined by the positional value tag.

In the end, Brad has built this team and it is a damn good one.

How many times did Barry Sanders have 1900+ total yards and 20td’s?

Different era but id wager he has 1900 total yards or close to it many times.

Hit 1900+ twice… Never had 20 tds. Barry is my favorite player ever…I’m just trying to put Gibbs season into perspective. Easily top 5 season ever for a Lions RB

WHILE SPLITTING CARRIES!!!

I think it has helped both of them stay fresh but it could have been an even bigger year if he wasn’t sharing the load. Of course it could have been worse though too

They’re congas. Perfect for stress relief when watching the Lions.

I won’t lie. I hated this pick at the time because I was of the mindset it was just too high for a RB with how the league was. I will eat all the crow and be happy with how absolutely wrong I was. Even though I loved his highlights I just think I was just seeing him as another Swift and we already had that. Or had it, I can’t remember when we traded Swift.

So glad he is a Lion.

Speaking of which, anyone hear from Nick Wrong today?

This has been the most overlooked part of the Holmes/Campbell draft strategy.
Of course, taking every opportunity to ring my own bell, my response to the Gibbs pick was, “Hell yes!”
He is so much more than just a RB. It was clear instantly that nobody had done their homework on the guy and the opinions were 100% based in ignorance.

Now this we agree on for certain!

It’s a communal tradition in the Den after Brad bitchslaps everyone’s mock draft to the moon and back. It’s a bonding ritual that breeds humility and raises the slim possibility that “I could be wrong” before pressing send throughout the year. Thank you, Brad.

What is a message board without that? Is it really a message board without that?

I wasn’t really referring to the board. You guys have regular jobs.
It’s the talking heads that condemned the entire draft that I’m referring to.
Hell, I’m an old basketball coach, with way too much time on my hands, and I knew he was a superstar.
The media types confirmed my suspicion that they mostly get by on personality, opinion, and sometimes, history.
The only guys I’ve paid much attention to the last couple of years are Gruden, Rex, and Dungy (one of my all time coaching heroes).

I wanted Jalen Carter but I never shitted on the Gibbs pick. I don’t buy the positional value thing….i never have. But anything that Brad does I goes with it because he had done nothing but make steady progress since he took over. He and Dan. So no matter what man-crush I might have on a player if they decide to go a different direction opposed to my fantasies I have no problem with it at all!
