Nah, you don’t have to be a superstar at QB to be worthy of a 1st round pick. That’s kinda my point. Guys like Baker, Darnold, Nix, Love, Tua, etc… were all worth 1st rounders, even if they’re not superstars.
Same is true at OT. A guy like Decker for instance… he’s an above average starting LT… and totally worth his pick and contract. But if you take the Taylor Decker of RBs in the 1st, well you’ve made a bad pick. You can find that guy on day 3.
Gibbs was a great pick for the Lions cause we already had St. Brown, Jamo, Monty, Goff and a strong oline. Adding Gibbs and LaPorta to that mix put our offense over the top.
But if Gibbs got drafted by a team with a shit oline and a mediocre qb, I bet he’s averaging 4.5 yards per carry instead of 5.6 yards per carry.
He landed in the perfect spot to maximize his ability. You can’t stack the box vs the Lions, well you can try but good chance you will be ■■■■■■ soon. We just have so many weapons.
I also think this is a reason Ben Johnson might stay. He’s got every piece a coordinator could dream of coming back again next season. If you leave for a rebuilding team, good chance that talent level on offense stinks.
That’s just your way of thinking. No one picks a QB or any player at any position, just to be an average player. The pressure is no more on a RB to be a star player than any other position picked in the first round. That just your personal feeling about that RB position & you have gone on and on about this for quite some time.
Well I couldn’t disagree more with this. Yes, you’re always hoping to draft a star, but you go into it knowing not every player will be a star. And it’s not even opinion that an OK OT/QB >>>>>>>> an OK RB. Just look at their contracts. Look how their careers go. That’s just a fact.
The word “generational” is pure hyperbole. It means, or should mean, “once in a generation”. Is Gibbs the best back in 25 or 30 years? Naw. C’mon. Right now most folks have him as the 3rd best back this season.
He’s the best back out of the 2023 draft, he’s making the Lions very hard to beat, and he might well help them win a Superbowl.
That’s good enough!!
Watching Greenie (bored) talk about the necessity of having a run game if you want to be in the playoffs.
Seems like just last year RB’s were not a value position?
I think that is more fan perspective and, perhaps, media talking heads. I never thought teams felt that way. I heard Valente talking about it a few years back before the Lions picked Gibbs and had Montgomery. The NFL is trendy and copycat. I’m 44 years old so I know some of you who are older and have watched football a lot longer than I have know this. The Lions, today, are setting a trend that I think many teams will copycat. Teams will try and find a coach like Dan Campbell. They will try and find a Sonic and Boom combo like what the Lions have. They will try and find a GM like Holmes. And then when that trend gets old and the league catches up they will see a new trend and copycat that!
I reckon 44 years is long enough to pickup on some trends.
I’ve been watching all of my 64 years, but, I don’t count the first eight years because I really had no choice.
I agree with your analysis. WTF is going on, here?
Although I did not post in the thread you mention, I remember blathering before the season started that Gibbs would be the best Lion pick in the last 20+ years. The search feature works really well because it was very easy to find the post.
Over the past few months, I realize that you and I think very similarly about football. I pretty much shared those same exact sentiments in the post I pasted above.
I felt a little more comfortable about La Porta than Jack Campbell though and added this later in the thread mentioned above.
Achane is a littler guy who has had some difficulty staying healthy.
In 2024, he had more of a D’Andre Swift type season with a couple of big games of 120+ yards rushing, but 10 games under 50 yards with 6 of those 25 yards or less.
This is an excellent point. That word is overused lately regarding sports and I’m probably guilty. “Generational” does in fact mean once every 20-30 years. Thank you for the reminder, it’s easy to get caught up in hyperbole at times.
