There’s also a matter of technique. DMo is bigger, but his technique is MUCH better. DMo meets the LB in the “hole” - very close to the line of scrimmage, square, w/some momentum of his own behind the hit. Weight aside, it gets the LB caught up in the rest of the OL/DL traffic and gives JG a lot of space to work with.
Monty def needed to be in there more given the dynamics of the game, but Gibbs will have to learn to stand in. Not only so Goff gets better protection from him, but so Gibbs being in there doesn’t telegraph his role in the passing game.
I feel like there is some stubbornness from the Lions on forcing the interior runs that were so effective in 2023 and 2024. It’s not working in 2025. Glasgow is a downgrade from Ragnow, Ratledge is at least for now a downgrade from Zeitler, and Mahogany was only in his 1st season as a starter.
I was getting the feeling as the game progressed that if Gibbs was in and they thought it was a passing down they were running a double A gap blitz. It was happening too often. And if you want to get critical. Why didn’t Morton pick that up and either have a play called that exposes that blitz or change personnel to shut that down.
The lack of adjustment to that A Gap blitz was shocking.
After i posted that Glasgow was an unsung hero last week — he shit the bed. Probaby his worst game as a pro. The Vikings were mercilessly attacking him. No more positive posts from me!
Well, now that I think of it, let’s see if it works for other teams: Jayden Daniels is really balling out this year. He’s very under-appreciated. We’re in for some really tough-sledding. He’s gotta be all-pro this year.
I agree. But, Jah can’t do it from the backfield. He needs to be lined up wide. Take the LB with him or force the Safety to declare for the hot route to be established. Morton tried to adjust late by having both Monty and Jah on the field at the same time. But…As you know: Morton is slow to adjust.
The best way to beat that A gap blitzing is having a TE hit the blitzing LB with a wham block. That frees up the RB to run a middle screen to the area vacated by the blitzing LB. It works a lot better if you have a 2nd TE that can block better than Brock Wright. But since he is all we have at the moment it is still better to have Brock do the wham block than Gibbs taking him on head up. Then you have Gibbs as your safety valve.
And that includes blocking. Gibbs has saved Goff’s ass on two, distinct times this season that I can see in my head. Both times it was guys coming off the edge, though. He f***** up on Sunday with the guy coming up the middle by not squaring up. I’m betting he doesn’t make that mistake again.
