Uhh..this is not a recipe for success especially with Goff at the helm who isn’t super mobile and is an assassin if you give him time.

Was a great move by Flores. Took gibbs out of the game and took advantage of him in pass protection.
My counter to that is run Gibbs on a route… Now you gotta get the ball out quick. But expecting Gibbs to take on linebackers with a 40 pound weight disadvantage is a poor plan.
Elite Defensive game plan
How about stop having Gibbs pass block .
Put him as WR3 and get DMONT in there when he’s not at RB
Lif sit down sorry bud love you tho
It’s what Flores is known for. It’s literally the identity of his defenses. Pressure and Blitz rate.
And yet we still looked completely unprepared for it.
40+ pounds, and a running start. He was doomed. We ran one quick slant to ARSB yesterday, and it was perfect. Wish we would have called more to combat the defense
LaPorta had a slant that also worked. They want to blitz constantly gotta get the ball out quick. Otherwise Goff is gonna get killed
Honestly, This isn’t that bad for how they were overloading the interior with blitzes. Gibbs stepped up and did a decent job.. go back and watch it. The issue is that we kept sending everyone out, always counting on our back to take on linebackers, and weren’t getting the ball out. We also never leaked Gibbs out for a screen.. which would have killed them on some of those..
We ran multiple screens that were constantly blown up.
You have two real solutions for it.
A quick Hot read, slants, screens etc and let the pass rush be there downfall.
Put a TE, OG, or WR pulling across to take him out of the play long enough for a shot across the middle.
So if you can’t get the screen game going what is the magical play call for interior pressure in two seconds?
Seems like slim pickings.
I have zero faith that yesterday’s offensive line could have handled the required complexity and attention to detail to pull this off.
Spread the defense out and start running slants, crossers, drags, etc. You’ve got 2 30m+ WRs, a rookie 3rd rounder, a top TE, and a speedy RB at your disposal. One of these guys has to get open.
We of course have hot reads built in our pass plays. Some in the game stream commented on Jared seemingly seeing ghosts. Are we sure that some of it wasn’t a down game for our QB in terms of handling the blitz?
I’m sure we ran plenty of crossing routes. But crossers take times. We aren’t by nature a slant merchant team. Personally I don’t think it’s a panacea and when your QB’s mind is scrambled it a far riskier play then folks are suggesting. We did attempt at least two of them though.
Well, there lies a problem. If your OL can’t block and you can’t execute screens because they’re blown up because the other team knows you can’t reliably run quick slants…well, have fun eating dirt, Jared Goff.
I agree with you. The IOL is a massive problem. And that’s a bad spot to be having major issues.
Fortunately we won’t face a defense as well equipped to expose this weakness until the Packers on Turkey day. But we have to find a remedy by then or Edge and Micah will make us pay dearly.
They did have Dmo and Gibbs in at the same time.
And a failure of the coaching staff whose mantra is finding out what players do well and putting them in positions to be successful. That accounts for Gibbs at least.
Is a losing-steams Glasgow our best solution as a starting center at this point? He’d be a great backup, especially if that means a lesser load.
Not my monkeys, not my circus, but as a Lions fanboy, I wonder…
This is a bit of a simplification.. and we do have different strengths and personell, but teams are playing us more like they did agains the rams when goff was there. They are mugging the line of scrimmage, making it more difficult to run our zone runs.. and also making it tougher on Jared to identify the rush. This is making it dangerous to run playaction more often, since they are getting free rushers / penetration at times. The way to counter that is to switch up the run game to more things like duo, man blocking.. but we are doing less of that as we have simplified and are less diverse in our run game to help our young guys. The other way to help is to move the pocket more, run more screens, delayed runs, etc to keep them off balance. (This is what I think the coaches should have done more of). You can also beat them by going to the straight drop back passing game and identify rusher and get the ball quickly in to space.. but I think this is a weakness of jared’s game, so you start to see him struggle some.
