Grading Brad's Draft Picks

Since it’s the bye week and I’m bored, I thought I would grade all 27 of Brad Holmes draft picks.

  • Sewell - A+ - no commentary required
  • Onwuzurike - B- - in terms of talent identification and character this was a good pick
  • McNeill - A+ - it’s an A for talent and the + is for value in round 3
  • Melifonwu - C+ - we’ve only seen 6-8 good games in 3+ years, and he was originally drafted as a CB but there is clearly some talent in there
  • St Brown - A+ - should really have several +s here, absurd value in round 4
  • Barnes - B - it would be an A if he had been starter ready in year one
  • Jefferson - C - can’t fault any 7th round pick
  • Hutchinson - A+ - nailed it
  • Williams - B - as much as Jamo is now breaking out, we haven’t seen great value for the trade up in two and a quarter seasons
  • Paschal - D - a rare miss
  • Joseph - A - ballhawk starting safety in the third is a great pick
  • Mitchell - D - maybe a tough grade for a 5th round pick, but he has shown very little
  • Rodriguez - A- - great pickup in the sixth, good on ST and viable as a backup LB
  • Houston - B- - that small burst of production makes this an OK pick for a sixth rounder
  • Lucas - C - same logic as Jefferson
  • Gibbs - A+ - positional value be damned, any time you draft a superstar it’s an A+
  • Campbell - C - has been mildly disappointing so far
  • LaPorta - A+ - even if he doesn’t hit the heights of last season it’s still an excellent pick
  • Branch - A+ - what was the rest of the league doing letting him drop to the middle of the second?
  • Hooker - C- - tough to grade someone who hasn’t played a snap and isn’t planned to
  • Martin - D- - so far this hasn’t been a great pick, but I’m optimistic that that might change
  • Sorsdal - C - has looked good and not so good as a backup, jury is still out
  • Green - C - same logic as Jefferson and Lucas
  • Arnold - B - not really fair to grade picks after four games, looks like he belongs but has some growing to do for sure
  • Rakestraw - C - hasn’t had any opportunities yet
  • Vaki - C+ - already a ST dawg, has flashed offensive potential
  • Manu - C - we just have to wait and see
  • Wingo - A - looks like we have a steal here
  • Mahogany - C - judgement isn’t fair yet

Jamo’s lack of production was known coming in for the first year…guessing they would have hoped for more the 2nd year. That was by design and got us a better pick (basically like getting a higher pick the next year, as well as adding Jamo to the mix). I am calling that an A, that will read as an A+ by season’s end. Jamo is a major reason we’re gonnna win the SB, and Brad had the foresight to see it playing out exactly as it did. Jamo’s lack of production to date was literally part of the plan.

I totally get how you arrive here…I also think they view picks especially with such an eye on the dynasty/future, that this one is still TBD and could end up being a major player in a SB run…or 3, or 5.

I"ve got a TBD on this guy too

I hate that I agree w/you on this. Even though I agree with almost all of your picks, this one was more noteworthy (to me) because I was SO wrong on him. I really thought this cat would ball out for us. I was very wrong about him.

I think Hook is way too early to tell, and to be honest, he’s ahead of where I expected him to be at this moment in time. I think he evolves into an A

Another TBD, for me. I still view him as a high ceiling guy, but have to admit, I expected more from him by this time in his development. I think his floor is a B though - long term.

I think this ends up as a solid A+ and one of Holmes’s most genius moves. This will age well, my bro. We truly needed another bald guy too, so it hits on the handsome front as well.

…the rest of 'em, I agree with. A fun read, and fun exercise!
