I won’t lie I’m a little worried.
Scale of 1 to 10… 1 being terrified and 10 being 3 extra strength gummies relaxed… I’d go a 7
If you were going to war with the intention of winning, would you hire first time pilots? The Lions are too hung up on this culture thing IMO. Someone once said “You Play to Win the Game”. Smart man he was.
I’m more concerned about schedule than I am coordinators
I think both coordinators were “logical” hires that the staff have worked with and are familiar with. That gives me comfort, BUT I do know there’s going to be “growing pains” so I would probably say about 7.5 on a 1-10 scale.

Absolutely thrilled that we retained Townsend. I thought he was gone for sure.
And yet both of the first-time coordinators we hired last time just got head coaching jobs.
Also, Morton is not a first-time coordinator.
We were not considered a contender at this time. I think the Eagles have passed us. They have made the kind of moves that we should be making.
To me that’s irrelevant, just like it was when he hired them last time. If they can coach, they can coach.
Also Dan tried to go with the experienced guy when he brought Anthony Lynn with him. It was an unmitigated disaster. Just hire the best coaches.
Eagles hired a 1st time OC this year.
Lions did not.
Yep, just like we are scouting next man up for players they are scouting next man up for coaches. Internal hires are easy, the guys that you believe have not peeked and are new hires and are taking a step up are actually harder I would think. The “Peter Principal” is always in play.
I don’t trust them at all. They have to prove it. I trust Dan Campbell to make the proper moves if things go off the rails See: Anthony Lynn and Aubrey Pleasent. Lions will be fine as long as MCDC is at the controls.
The Lions need a little more Ray Zalinsky in them. Like they did when they had Jamaal Williams walk.
.
I’m confident in our head coach, and the talent we have on the roster.
I feel like we could be successful in pretty much any scheme. By default that makes me confident in the coordinators.
I think it’s a good question to ask.
There’s a lot of “system” in place around these guys, so I’m not concerned. Not only that, but their contributions to date are noteworthy.
That said… Am I completely enthusiastic about Shep’s bright-eyed enthusiasm? No, not really. He’s lacking the healthy skepticism that a few years as DC will inject him with.
Am I completely enthusiastic about Mort exhibiting a bit of discomfort and apprehension in the spotlight? No, not really.
If Mort could bear the burden a few less scars, and if Shep could carry them for him, I think they’d have the energy I’m looking for in both.
As football minds go, Shep is sharp AND he has guys around him (Jim O’Neil) that really help to fill that out. Mort is and has been the football mind that other OC’s rely on to bolster their approach at football, AND he has his buddy David Shaw to go along with Montgomery and Fraley. Offense lacks nothing from a coaching perspective, just demonstrate sound play-calling chops or lose it to Dan.
Yeah, I never felt like AG was a top end DC for the record. And I expect he will bomb the Jets from what I’ve seen him do. But I did think we had a chance for an upgrade that I’m kind of sad we didn’t take advantage of. Think of what Fangio did for Philly.
But Ray got outsmarted by a fat guy wearing road flares who went to college for 7 years
