Just as it is for the players, training camp is also a time for coaches to improve.
Recently, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell explained the process of improvement for himself and the coaching staff during the month of preseason practices as the players tune up for the season and fight for a spot on the final 53-man roster.
“You try to fabricate as many difficult decisions that you can put your team in and yourself because that’s what’s happening inevitably,” Campbell said. "I’ve said this before — it’s one thing to set them up, think through it (and say) here’s the possibilities.
“But then you have one of these where it’s 40 seconds left, minus-40, no timeouts, and you play it out and now all of the sudden, you’re in it. You’re not quite to that point yet until you are absolutely in it.”
creating uncertainty for opposition…saving foxy’s high percentage plays for SB. First ‘punter’ to throw a TD in a SB…Jack MF’n Fox…and he hit for TWO of 'em.
This is the biggest difference between DC and pretty much every coach we’ve ever had (and probably 99% of coaches, period). How do you think Patricia would’ve answered if you asked him what he was doing to improve as a head coach over the three years he was here?
I am happy to hear that Dan really does self reflect and look at his decisions and look to improve. I think we’ve seen growth from him as a game manager but I do think he has plenty of room to improve there as well.
He was far more aggressive year one than he is now. I think it’s clear he loves being aggressive and he’s getting better on his decisions when to be and not to be.
As a rookie HC we knew he’d have some growing pains. I really like his approach and the fact he recognizes that.
Matty P would never do that or admit he has room for growing.
