I fish. Not as often as I’d like, for some reason I don’t prioritize it which is surprising for how much I enjoy it.
I had a boat but we weren’t using it so I sold it 2 years ago, wish I hadn’t though. I’ve had Jon boats, probably 4 of them, but again just didn’t use them enough and eventually sold them and then a couple of years would pass and I buy another one to not use.
I caught some blue gills in TN this one time. That was cool
As a kid my friends and I caught a fish in the creek and couldn’t get it off the hook and the kid with ADHD wound up turning it inside out, so..:like fishing was kinda weird for me for a while, you know?
like I mean inside out.
it was reverse of what is normal.
took a while for me to go back to fishing after I saw that happen
Call me this selfish fisherman. I like my kayak and rivers with live bait on one rod and crankbait on the other. Over the years I’ve fished in deep v boats, typical bass boats, little jon boats, canoes and kayaks. I will hands down choose kayak every time because I can’t stand having other people in the same boat as myself. And I’m teaching my boys the same way LOL!
Don’t get me wrong I love slaying those walleye on the big lake, but there’s also walleye in those small rivers too then I can attack that alone! I like fishing trout, walleye, perch, pike, bass, crappie and catfish.
Yesterday our town had their annual kids fishing tournament, grand prize was a kayak. 2 age groups, free and lunch is provided for parents and family as well. 44 acre former sand pit, all shore fishing. Numbers weren’t all that great this year but it was a really hot and sticky day. 4 years ago a walleye just under 8 pounds was taken. All participants win something, polls and backpacks and a kayak each year.
I bought 3 kayaks last fall as people were trying to get rid of them b4 winter. Some of the guys i used to work with kept posting pics of fish they caught drifting the Muskegon River so i figured I’d give it a try.
But since i herniated my disc in my back in January, not sure if i can carry a kayak, so they sit for now.
I can’t go alone either, thankfully my boys are old enough and big enough to do the lifting. Have to try to get in the water as much as possible next couple years. If you have anybody that can help you don’t hesitate to reach out to them.
That said we had some absolutely crazy trips on a couple local rivers, four that come to mind. One we got caught in an updraft and there was strong winds and heavy rain s and only a foot of water on the last stretch of river before we port. Wind was so strong you could see the bottom of the river at times and our aluminum canoe was bouncing around from rock to rock as we get hung up and then pushed off by a wave. Lightning and wind, we had to choose to stay in the middle of the river or go to the sides where the tops of tall white pine trees are snapping off due to the forces of straight line wind. The forecast for the entire day was beautiful, and that changed in a hurry.
Another we got hung up on a rock just before some rapids as we tried to squeeze the canoe between two big rocks and when we pushed away from the rock the current took us the back way that we tried to avoid and a large overhanging cedar tree from the bank knocked my old man into the water and I grabbed the edge of the canoe and I felt the water on my knuckles, it was that close to flipping the whole canoe.
Another one, we first got our kayaks, my buddies and our ladies went for a kayak float we heard a few gunshots upstream ways, we thought nothing of it hear shots all the time. And on our way back we had a guy in a boat rush up to us and tell us that there’s a manhunt for a guy that just shot at some kids in the river. That was pretty crazy.
And a couple years ago when 47 was shot at a rally, we were out fishing at the time with minimal service when we got the news small bits at a time, we weren’t sure exactly what the details were for a while.
Most of it is good fishing memories, those are just the worst things that had happened. And a big part of the reason why I choose kayak over canoe! So I definitely recommend anybody that can go fishing one way or another whether on a lake or river, go! Always pay attention to the forecast. More times than not you’ll have great memory from each experience or in some cases a crazy story to tell!
Edit: on two different occasions I saw the two biggest snapping turtles I never seen in my life, they were absolutely huge! One had to have a shell that was at least 24" in in diameter. And one thing I had just missed that lurked around the next bend, a buddy of mine saw a snapping turtle on the shore with a fish in its mouth and an eagle with running towards it with its wings spread out trying to scare the turtle away from the fish but the turtle pulled the fish into the river.
If you notice the eagle on my profile picture, that was taken on one of my many trips on the river.
Been in the fishing industry for 40+ years, rarely get to fish because of it. Tight lines….
Before age 30, I fished once in my life. Spent most of my time on basketball, baseball, football …
When I had kids, we had a pond in the neighborhood, and they loved it. So I had to learn how to fish.
Today, both of my sons are great fisherman, have won tournaments. My grandsons also love it and one got his own bass boat and is a regular on Lake Oconee in GA.
Me? I do it. Honestly, I usually don’t love it, unless we have an epic day. For me, salt water > fresh water. But either way, spending time with my sons and grandsons is worth it in spades.
Caught my first fish of the year yesterday. Nice little perch. They will be coming in to spawn from Lake Superior here soon. Best time of year to catch some eaters.
my biggest Walleye was 29 and 1/4 inches.
Dang, you guys are bringing in some bruts!
@JadedLionsFan used to charter with Mark Martin for late fall walleye’s in Muskegon Lake. Supposedly you can get some big females 10-12lbs, fishing at night trolling.
Nice eye!
ok-how many of you use braided line? I have been fishing with it for like 30 years, and I “used” to run into Walmart and just buy a box of line that would fill one reel…but now, I buy BIG spools that can spool up 5 or 6 different reels, about an 8/strand braid. I got away from Mono ‘for the most part’-I don’t like the line memory. but do have a few poles with that on them. that said, it doesn’t matter the “brand” of braid and they have braid that is 24-strand -I typically buy my line off Amazon or Temu.
I don’t go fishing nearly as much anymore between work, my dad being gone and my buddy living in Texas. I got out for the first time the beginning of May for the first time in probably 5 years. I’ll tell you what, fishing in Florida is nothing like fishing in Michigan lol. I felt completely lost and it’s like learning a new language.
I’ve fished full moon late October and it’s not fun but you can boat some big one’s. Mississippi fishing with the right people is way more fun. Tom is also the guy I fish with in Puerto Vallarta.
I forgot to add that these were late season fish, November, big girls coming in from Lake Michigan.
Usually around 2am most of the slim girls have already exited the bar. Then it’s harpoon time ![]()
