The comparable deals that got done this offseason (Konecny/Faber, being two examples) probably cost the team a few million more than they would’ve needed had they done it last season (where they were both no-brainer re-signings) and as we all know, cap space in the NHL adds up really quickly, and a few mill here and there really makes a difference when trying to fill out a bottom six or bottom pairing.
Not a fan of the Yzerplan. Teams in the NHL turn it around quicker than he has. He gets a pass because he’s a legend in these parts but realistically he’s been mediocre as a GM so far.
Part of it is their shit luck in the lottery, but they simply dont have 1 guy that is The Man. Someone that other squads fear and can take over a game.
Maybe in short spurts they do, but they have sucked balls for about a decade and dont really have The Guy.
It’s not Pistons level debacle, but it’s not good.
I believe in the Yzerplan. Building the foundation isn’t fun to watch and delayed gratification sucks ass in sports. But the Tigers and Wings are both suffering from the “Win one for Mr. I” mentality where we literally cleaned out everything for a shot at another championship.
That mentality creates a long road back to respectability. That isn’t to say there have not been mistakes in both organizations. But it is all the more reason to treasure what is going on with the Lions.
There’s definitely always some luck involved. What if with the Lions Sewell were drafted ahead of us? Sure we take Parsons but he’s not the culture setter Sewell is. What if another team had drafted Amon? And who is playing RT?
I think Yzerman is smart enough and has a good plan. He just needs some stars to align
If Brad had taken Trey Lance, that would have been a game changer. Not only is Lance a bust but that would have likely ended our relationship with Goff as well. And we wouldn’t have Sewell. That would greatly change things today.
My gut feeling is that both Yzerman (Red Wings) and Harris (Tigers) are being a bit handcuffed by Chris Illitch. Both the Red Wings and the Tigers seem to be on the same glide path to me. Both feel like they are right on the cusp of finally getting back into the playoffs, and both feel to me like they aren’t being allowed to make the moves that would really push them forward.
Of course the Wings do have a league salary cap contend with, and it certainly appears to me like the Tigers have an Illitch salary cap to contend with.
It’s just hard for me to think it’s just a coincidence that both teams seem on that same struggling path of “close but not quite there” and Illtch has control of both teams.
