I’m Getting the Feeling Caleb is a Bust

I realize it’s only two games and rookie quarterbacks can struggle, but I watched both of those games in full and he just doesn’t seem to have the “It” factor. He significantly lacks awareness of the pocket around him. He forces balls into triple coverage at times, struggling to make sound and simple decisions within the structure of the offense. He just doesn’t seem to have the fire I would expect to see for a #1OA QB pick. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I think the Bears did it to themselves once again. Now, his team committing penalties every other play certainly didn’t help, but I’m not seeing anything at this point that has me worried. Caleb reminds me of Fields but not as explosive of a runner and with a weaker arm. He made a couple of nice throws early in that game yesterday, but looked brutal after the scripted plays were over. You could also see the frustration in DJ Moore on some of those passes. His arm strength seems average and his decision making seems almost below average, even at this point. He does seem to have some accuracy when on the move, but not quite as much when he’s forced to throw from the pocket. I think that will be the key to beating that guy. I also think the Bears got infatuated because he reminds them a little of Mahomes, who as we know they passed over for Mitch ■■■■■■■ Trubisky. :joy:.

I have been saying that he has a better chance of being bad than being top 10 in the league.

This is the NFL where stud college QBs come to have their souls crushed

It’s too early to tell IMO, but it is fun to see him struggling after proclamations from Bears fans that he was going to be the first Bears QB ever to throw for 4,000 yards (currently on pace for 2,270).

He hasn’t played Detroit yet

As much as I appreciate the effort to will that shit into existence, the dude has a long career ahead of him, and I doubt his first two games set him on an unalterable trajectory.

It’s very possible you are correct. I am by no means making a definitive proclamation. But at this point I just don’t see the flashes of greatness that I would expect to see from a sure-fire number one overall pick at QB. I do base some of this on reports from those in attendance at Bears practices and the seemingly unmistakable frustration shown by some of their receivers. Of course, they could’ve been pissed at other things, but DJ Moore was definitely upset when a critical pass skipped into the turf 5 feet from him. :joy:. I’m not so certain they made an upgrade over Justin Fields and I couldn’t be happier.

Apparently outside of 1 snap, Caleb was pressured on every dropback last night

soooo, that offensive line looks like dog poo.

and they have been struggling massively to run the ball aswell

In general that offense does not look good rn.

The team certainly didn’t help him out. In fact, both teams looked like dog shit. Every play seemed to either be a penalty, a turnover, or a sack. I believe there was 21 total penalties called in that game. Clown show comedy. Reminded me of the early Patricia days. Not that the later Patricia days were any better.

I watched a few of his games last season while he was in college and I agree with this assessment. He’s a good college QB but seemed to thrive when he had subpar competition.

Now you are just being nasty :joy::joy:

It is still very early in his career and I am not sure I will go anywhere near the “bust” label in year 1.

Well Goff had a bad game, but I am not going to call for his head. I am wondering if I need to rethink my views on playing in preseason though. We seem… off. Off in our timing more than anything else. I am starting to wonder if I am wrong about sitting starters. I know it cuts both ways.

His talent is off the charts. I watched him throwing sidearm darts to get around defenders. You know, the kind of throws Patrick Mahomes invented even though Stafford had been slinging them in the NFL while Mahomes was in high school. The point is that making throws like that is a rare skill. Williams also clearly trusts his ability to make something out of nothing more than he should. Those 50/50 throws to a covered man in college become more like 20/80 when your receivers have NFL cornerbacks covering them. His offensive line didn’t do him any favors as they seemed to be taking the observe and report approach to pass blocking.

I think he’ll be fine as long as Chicago gives him a better offensive line and doesn’t lose their patience too quickly. That’s the hard part when you have a coaching staff and front office who feel like they have to win now in order to keep their jobs.

New OC, New QB, offense still stinks.

If they miss the postseason, Eberflus, even though he has shown his defense to be pretty good, might be out the door at seasons end if they cant figure out how to get that offense going. Poles will still be GM, hes actually made decent moves and the Panthers trade will keep him alive for another year at minimum.

Not saying their season is over, but thats worse case for the bears imo.

They should have traded out of the pick again. Caleb ain’t it.

Its TWO games. If he doesn’t get better then for sure a bust. Bears oline is a joke. They just need to be conservative with him and let the defense steal a game or two.
