The Rams successfully blamed all of their failures on this man. McVay basically threw him into the back of a truck and drove him to the local dump and physically kicked him to the curb. Might as well of called his momma a Ho. He sent him to the Detroit Lions of all places. A place where the dead go to die and certainly NFL players go for the paycheck only. Apart from guys who have come back from injury, I contend winning MVP and a Super Bowl would make Goff the greatest comeback player of all time.
I loved me some Matt Stafford. Was very bummed to see him go. Thought that was our last best chance at winning football in Detroit. I was willing to give Goff a chance, but have to admit I was getting pretty pissed at him around week 11 of his first year. However, since the end of that first year, the guy has been a stud. I would not trade him for Matt Stafford straight up right now. Goff is the best quarterback I’ve ever seen in a Lion’s uniform since 1978. Certainly not the most physically gifted, but reading a defense, his accuracy, and timing of throws are second to none in Lion’s lore.
“…but something happened that the Super Bowl ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable: a Goff”.
Goff’s story is more “Detroit” than Stafford’s was. Hate comparing the two, but they’re kind of inseparable now.
Matt was the chosen one who was supposed to come bring Detroit to glory. Goff is the guy who just puts his head down, goes to work, and gets the job done - but ends up getting tossed to the side anyways. And just like Detroit as a city, is now having a revival.
Love them both for different reasons, but I honestly find Goff and his story more resonant and easy to cheer for. (It also helps that he’s actually won stuff in Detroit)
But the NFL is littered with insane stories of come back.
For sure Goff is something special. This is now the 3rd or 4th team since HS that he has taken over a team that has stunk and made them a winner. This is not just by chance. Dude has something special.
McVay threw him under the buss alright, and the media licked it up like a dog lapping up it’s own dung. Remember when Goff couldn’t even win a game without McVay? They thought they were pretty safe since Goff went to perennial loser in Detroit and they had just hired a rookie meathead head coach. One who keeps receipts and knows how to use them, bye the way.
