Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz out indefinitely with foot injury -- sources

Based on the info that has come out so far… this is a fairly minor injury with little risk of long term issues.

Feet are complicated due to high number of bones, ligaments, and tendons… but all indications are that this is a type of clean up procedure for an avulsion fracture. These typical heal quickly, which is why Wentz was able to have the initial injury long ago and not even realize he had a fracture.

The weird part to me is that the recovery period is being estimated with a wide range of 5-12 weeks.

My suspicion is that this might be a little gamesmanship… since 5 weeks would be a week 1 return… while 12 weeks would suggest a PUP start to the season to allow another QB on roster for games 1-6.

If the Colts truly think he will be out 12 weeks… implying that he may have an earlier return may be a way to maintain leverage if they want to trade for Foles.
The Colts likely assume the Bears just want to dump Foles’ contract… so they would be wise to make themselves appear less than desparate to acquire Foles.
