So of the 29 players he’s drafted, the ONLY ones who didn’t do the bulk of the athletic testing were Jamo, Hooker and James Mitchell, who were obviously injured. Check out the rest…
Kerby is the only one who didn’t do most of the testing, and that can be explained by a poorly-timed hamstring issue (pulled it during his first pro day 40).
Otherwise it’s pretty much only a few skipped agility drills, which is all the rage the last couple of years.
So what does that mean for guys who skipped the testing? Like JTT, Donovan Jackson, Zabel and Oladejo only did the jumps. Harmon, Mykel Williams, Golden, Milroe only ran, Mike Green only did the agility testing (3-cone, SS).
Scourton and Sawyer did nothing.
Tyler Booker, Shemar Stewart, Kenneth Grant, Jihaad Campbell, Starks, Landon Jackson, Egbuka, Hairston, Ezieruaku, Conerly, Nick Emmanwori, Jayden Higgins, Kelvin Banks, Darius Alexander, Tory Horton, did all or a majority of the testing.
Does it mean anything? I don’t know, but I found it interesting. I suspect as more and more of these guys refuse to test doing so will become less important to us, but this year should be a decent litmus test.
This dude is a good football player. I was just rewatching the Senior Bowl for the upteenth time and he really stood out. I don’t see why this guy could not be a DE for us. I guess I have somewhat overlooked him because he kind of falls between our 1st and 2nd pick. I think his play is actually better than a lot of guys beimg projected as DEs for us in the 1st round.
Rodrigo with a 4.52 forty and 36 reps of 225?? Damn. Good stuff. Will be interesting to see if this trend continues. I think you are on to something though. Lions love guys who are ultra competitive.
I know some players are holding private workouts late. But yeah, I could see the Lions using their willingness to workout as a litmus test of sorts for competitiveness. Doesn’t mean they are off the board entirely, but it could definitely be a factor they take into account and explore the reasons why more.
I didn’t realize Barnes and ARSB had such similar numbers. Height & times are very close. Maybe they can cross train, Barnes drops 15 lbs, St. adds 15.
I think so, too. The need to compete has to be stronger than any other calculation the player may be processing. That’s what it takes to be someone that can be depended on when the going gets tough late in the season. Can you win with guys that don’t exhibit that unyielding desire? Sure. If you get enough stuff right on your team, you can win with guys that wouldn’t be on our board. But, we’ll stick to our board and our type of players.
Yeah - I think the desire as well the confidence to compete And it is probably as much about the others NOT doing the work as it is about these guys doing it. It speaks to the passion a player has. Not THE litmus test but certainly a part of the equation.
Yeah, exactly. A big ol’ checkmark in the pros column that the guys who don’t test won’t get. And when it comes to becoming a Lion having Brad and the rest of the FO fall in love is the #1 requirement, and if you’re missing that big ol’ checkmark that won’t be easy to pull off.
