Receptions and yards seems like an insufficient method of analysis. The 49ers have a lot of games in which teams are playing from behind. Which means a lot of receptions and yards.
Ward is significantly better than either of our CBS IMO and Leonoir is better than Jerry.
I remember when we had Darius Slay or ‘Big Play Slay’ that being said I can see how CB’s can be used and useful to help a team so I can see merit in having a stud Corner.
Revis was the best CB ever and made a big impact by shutting down one side of the field. At the time most teams only had a one and a two WR as their main targets. Now every team has 3 or 4 WRs, 2 TEs, and at least 1 RB that all can be targets. Give me 2 CBs and a slot that can tackle and cover ok. I don’t need a shutdown corner. The money should be spent on the edge rushers that can get home.
This times 1000. Watching this team at its best and its worst, has made me come to the realization that a good O line and a good D line make everyone else look great. It’s almost all that matters.
This is a really good point as well. I know that in games where we were getting pressure, the CB’s seemed to be holding their own. Perhaps it could be argued that a better defensive line would vault Sutton and Jacobs to middle of the pack?
We’ve generated reasonable amounts of pressure in 6 to 7 games. But we’ve only finished with any degree of efficiency in two or three of those. I’d say that in addition to generating more underlying pressure it’s equally important that we learn to finish at a decent rate.
I still think it’s important to be sound on all levels of the defense. That way when attrition strikes you’ve got a punchers chance at not having one position group completely tank the defense.
