It is Time For Hank Fraley as OC

Our system is based on the Erhardt-Perkins system that that Parcells tree runs, but we incorporated a ton of McVay/Shanny stuff in an effort to make Goff more comfortable. It’s really a combo system at this point.

And Payton’s assistants tend to be awful elsewhere. We tried Lombardi and Morton, and Carmichael hasn’t been any good calling plays either. Payton is the real brains there and others don’t have his gift. In fact Dan might be the most successful offensive mind out from under Payton.

Agreed.

I don’t think anyone currently associated with the Lions is allergic to incorporating new plays, concepts, etc.

The issue is (I assume) that there is little interest in scrapping the current offense in order to implement what a new coach has run elsewhere. There’s frankly little reason why a good OC couldn’t use the current offense (scheme, terminology, etc.) as a base, and then add his own flavor on top of it.

A good OC hire should be flexible enough where he’s the one guy who has to learn terminology rather than forcing the entire team to do so. If they hire someone like McDaniel, I’d be both confident in his ability to do that and excited to see how the offense evolves with his twist on things.

To do so would be to abandon their core philosophy.

The systems are largely predicated on how the OL plays. (or, at least with plays/concepts of each system being incorporated in one another) So, are you a Stretch or smashmouth team. Are we going to be less smashmouth because things didn’t work out with Morton or because Ben Johnson took a HC position?

Thinking about it even deeper, you have receivers and a QB developing chemistry in a system that provides choice routes to the receivers, something not exactly a staple in WCO.

We don’t have a system problem that needs fixed. We have an excellent system that we need to lean into. Any OC will need to embrace that.

We’ve talked a couple times about Fraley… I feel like this hire kills 2 birds with 1 stone.
First, we have a shared vision and familiarity with blocking scheme.
Second, , and maybe more importantly, we have an OC that can more easily influence what Hank’s doing within their core beliefs. Instead of run and blocking being wholly delegated to Hank, hopefully Petzing will be able to simplify things if/when we’re playing rookies or backups.
