Whats equally idiotic IMO is some people thinking Ben isn’t the straw that stirs the offensive drink. Some think the offense will be fine if Johnson leaves bc of Dan Campbell… I hope we never have to find out, but I vehemently disagree. Johnson is special and Campbell is not responsible for the offensive scheme, I think losing Ben would be hard to overcome.
I don’t disagree, but I think Tanner is right in position to slide in as OC. I could be wrong, but that’s just how I feel. They don’t just teach their players, they teach their coaches and Tanner is in everybody’s (meaning Dan and Ben) hip pocket at all times.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that. Dan has far more influence on the offense then anyone thinks. Bj is special and he and Dan are responsible for the scheme.
“What y’all did to Dallas, I thought about calling the police at one point or another throughout the game," Sherman told Gibbs. "I felt like, I couldn’t figure out exactly what the crime was, but it was criminal”
Also Ben is not irreplaceable. Players make systems work and DC is the straw. It’s not coincidence that all three phases have top notch coaches. Imagine the line of coaches who would want to come here if we don’t fill those positions internally? Ben’s aggressiveness is fueled by DCs aggression. A new coach would be different, but I feel would still be very successful. They just need to be on the same page as Goff and run the plays he likes to run. Plus we know Dan is not afraid to fire coaches if the results aren’t there. We’ll be fine.
Dan has instilled the culture to be a power run team since day 1… and even took over the play-calling when he didn’t like what he was seeing with A-Lynn running the offense.
And… Dan has to be credited with his aggressiveness to go for it on 4th down so often… because that keeps the entire play book open on 3rd and long plays. Dan has made it very difficult for defensive coordinators to feel bold on 3rd down.
Even looking back at 2021… a team that had much less talent… scored 29 points or more in 4 of their final 6 games with Dan calling plays. Plus… Ragnow and Decker were both out for season when that happened.
I agree on Dan’s influence on the offense and have no doubt that he and Ben communicate daily. I also think the other coaches on offense are part of that gameplanning daily which will impact them going forwards.
So, could offense take a step back without Ben, sure. However, could the offense be a bit different with no Ben and still be very successful…YES.
I think Johnson is fully responsible for the plan of attack but I don’t agree that Campbell does not have influence on the overarching scheme. I think Dan is far more of a gifted offensive mind than people realize.
When he took over play calling in 2021 the point production jumped from 18 to 20 PPG but the improvement was masked bc that includes three Tim Boyle starts and the COVID game vs. Denver where we were missing a host of players. Take those out and that figure jumps to 25.2 points per game. That would have been good for 13th in the league that season. With that roster? That’s terrific and isn’t far off from our 2022 number of 26.6 points per game.
I don’t believe that Dan will be the play caller when Ben leaves but I do believe he’s a helluva backstop if the next guy tanks.
As stated, Ben Johnson is special and a great offensive mind. My biggest concern if he leaves is how it will impact Goff. The ‘comfort’ factor in how he calls plays, why he calls them, and having that same voice in the headset I think is underrated. I am 100% confident that Goff will play well under another OC but having that trusted relationship he has with Ben and the play calling is what will be the biggest hurdle to overcome and take more time than most of us think.
I agree 100% on Dan and think it in a small degree goes to the meathead personna that he has, and doesn’t care. The guy is smart and knows football.
Many are quick to praise Ben (including me), and, yes, Ben has earned it, 100 fold. Yet, how much influence did Dan have on Ben and his playcalling is a question that doesn’t get asked enough.
It seems like some, when comes to the coaching tree, would have Dan be from the Ben Johnson tree and not Ben from the Dan Campbell tree.
I think there would of course be some regression without Ben. How much depends on whether or not Hank goes with him.
But ultimately Jimmies and Joes are what matters most and we’ve got dudes all over that unit and our defensive talent is getting to where I think we’re likely to be adding offensive reinforcements soon. Mostly on the OL I would imagine though I think we’re still looking for a young pass catcher that is both a man separator and a ball winner.
