The really neat part will be as computing power continues to exponentially rise. At some point, we will be able to feed a supercomouter AI enough data about proteins, dna, rna, enzymes etc…and give it a chance to run eleventy jillion simulations about how all this electrifried primordial soup stuff…annnnd…
it spits out that it’s bullshit, no way Jose…
and Science just inferred God did it…or something far beyond our ability to understand…which in a Clarke-ian way is Science’s best way of explaining God-like behavior.
This dovetails with my theory about life. I think meteors and ice that hit the earth frequently supply the building blocks of life. Most probably get burned up in our atmosphere, but a few make their way through. If a planet is habitable, being in the Goldie Locks zone, then life will succeed there. It may not be human life, it depends on the climate and circumstances of the particular planet. Humans might not be here right now if that meteor had not hit and killed all the dinosaurs. I believe the universe is teaming with life based on my assumptions above. It just makes sense that life is spread throughout the universe in this way. Come on JWST, do your job!!
But the earth is not a closed system. What is in “God’s” playbook where 5 basic building blocks of life are flying around on meteors? Did he just have extra that wouldn’t fit on earth?
It’s been postulated that the same law is why we exist. Life is an efficient way for matter to arrange itself to release energy more efficiently. Entropy drives matter to acquire life
I think most hit the nail on the head. We are not a closed system. We’ve been hit millions upon millions of times with extraterrestrial materials.
It makes the most sense to me that life exists where ever the conditions to support it exist. Most planets that support life won’t have a human comparable species. Sharks have had hundreds of millions of years head start on humans but I’ve never seen one drive a car.
If humans manage to survive as a species it will only be because we manage to get off our planet and then out of our solar system.
And this speaks purely to the beginning of life. It doesn’t factor in the Drake equation which adds in another whole layer of variables. Hell, we don’t even know if the Drake equation captures all of the variables that might exist for an environment conducive to life, at least, as we know it.
And if you do start drinking before happy hour, you may still learn…. that which you did the day before when you had also begun drinking before happy hour.
Gamma ray blasts can fry the entire system in a few seconds and we generally cant see 90% of them and there are hundreds spread out across the universe every day.
Oh, and sleep well tonight everyone after that tidbit.
My daughter saw your Gif and she knows this woman. Not personally but knows her as a creator on TikTok or Instagram or something or other. She was instantly able to pull up the full video.
Yeah. I get what you are boys are saying about earth not being a closed system. But this abiogenesis problem combined with the Second Law is essentially what @Weaselpuppy is saying. A few elements on a rock from outer space struck by lightning or gamma rays don’t eventually turn into a baby human that turns into an incredibly sophisticated adult with powers of logic and reason and sight and speech and hearing and learning….
Just because all the parts of a car exist in a giant bucket that’s shaken 10 Trillion times a year for 10 billion years, those parts aren’t going to one day miraculously fit together in a way that equals a working car. We all know it takes an engineer with intelligence to put those pieces together in a meaningful way that results in a working car. Same with life.
As insanely advanced as our Science has become, Science cannot create the “life force”. We can keep a body “alive” technically with machines but we cannot create the “spirit” or “active force” which is life. This still seems something left to God alone. If that term arouses personal antipathy, for the sake of approaching this fascinating discussion with an open-mind, consider using Life Force or Great Spirit or Originator or Creator or Alpha or anything else that suits your own conception. Is the idea of an originator any crazier than the stuff that’s beaming back to us from James Webb a million miles away?
Personally, I don’t need the stats, I believe in our Creator… but, yes i think the astronomic statistical improbability, supports the impossibility of abiogenesis. Statistics alone don’t prove the impossibility, but they seem to get us really, really, close.
You’re right. It starts with single cell organism that develops through evolution dependent on the conditions around it. It can take billions of years to evolve into complex animals just as it has here on earth. Science proves that there were 3 - 5 eras (depending upon exactly how they want to split it up) and that SCOs were the only life forms here at the beginning. Those SCOs could have turned into many different forms of life. In fact for a couple hundred million years, earth was dominated by dinosaurs. Science proves this. Science does not find any evidence of man during that time period. Had it not been for a meteor striking the earth, again proven by science, the dinosaurs most likely would still be here and be running the show. There is no evidence of man being on this earth prior to several million years ago, if you wanna call those apelike creatures men. Homo Sapiens have been around for only about 200,000 years.
Look I’m not saying there isn’t a supreme being. But I find absolutely zero evidence that it happened like they say it did in the Bible. I think scripture is nothing more than a tool used to control people and scam money. I’m sorry to be so blunt and I certainly respect others opinions. If that is what you choose to believe then I am fine with it. But I do think religion holds us back as a species and can be violently dangerous in the minds of many. If there is a supreme being there’s no true evidence that it wishes to have me dedicate my life or pray to that being. And certainly no evidence that it wants 10% of my cash. Like Carlin said, “he’s all powerful, all knowing, all seeing, all wise, but somehow…he just can’t handle money”. How convenient.
While we can’t create life (yet - give it time) we can manipulate life to be extended by many years. If life and death are all in God’s plan and we all have a date where we check out then how can we possibly change that date? I know you will say doctors prolonging life is God’s will but I will put the results squarely on the scientific method resulting in constant improvement. I suspect that in 100 years, if we don’t blow ourselves up due to religious reasons, that humans will be living even longer. So if it’s Gods will then why doesn’t he just give us that ability now? Why doesn’t he just make humans live 150 years, a 1000 years, with no medical interference?
I can’t prove that God doesn’t exist just as you cannot prove that I’m not standing next to a 6 foot tall invisible bunny. You can measure the air around me, you can take photographs, you can do whatever you like but as long as I have faith that the bunny exists, there’s really no evidence that will prove otherwise to me. Btw the bunny told me he created the universe - prove that he didn’t.
