Caveat to all this is he is on winning football teams as well. That’s just as important when your talking about qb records especially against other good qbs. Impressive none the less.

You really shouldn’t compare goff and stafford’s lions careers. They aren’t comparable. Lions are a top 5 roster w a number 1 unit at OL right now. When Stafford had anything close to a roster the resembles the last two years (in detroit) in his career he has had a 12-5 season and a super bowl, 11-5 season and a 10-6 season (and that roster had holes).

But don’t the stats include the rough years at the Rams and Lions? There is no such thing as “apples to apples” in football, but the stats are impressive. What I like most about Goff is he seems to become sharper as the pressure mounts (and he stays calm). Underrated ability.

Jared goff has had 1 1/2 rough years in his career, his rookie year when he played 7 games and 2021 in detroit. His rookie year where he played Matt stafford had 8-9 rough years in detroit. Its very impressive. It’s just misleading to compare jared Goff’s lions to stafford’s lions. They aren’t the same at all and we all should be able to admit stafford was typically the reason we had any chance at all.

If you are right, then it is misleading to compare QB’s in general I would think. Teams and circumstances are always different.

Jared never had a team as stacked at the team Matt had to win the SB.

You are not wrong. It’s what makes the Stafford vs Goff so interesting. The rams super bowl year the only thing that changed was the qb.

Devils advocate- in 2014 Stafford had a top 3 defense and 2 Pro Bowl wide receivers (including maybe the most talented WR in nfl history) and didn’t win a playoff game

I’m not bashing Stafford, but at least in Detroit he was a great QB who could take a bad to
Medicore team and make them good. He was never able to take a good team and make them great, or lead a very good team to postseason success.

Fair or not Goff had more success last season in Detroit than Stafford did in 10+ years as a Lion

All fair. In light of devil’s advocate i would suggest joe lombardi was a first year OC and was horrible. I can’t think of a guy in a better postion in terms of his career. Stafford w the forementioned 2 pro bowl wrs and then justin herbert w keenan allen and company and get fired from both inside 2 years at each.

Actually he did. The season previous to their super bowl win. That is part of the reason goff was getting trashed so badly in 2021. Its been well documented. They replaced the qb and won the super bowl.

Nahh. I watched that season. They didn’t have the same talent. And McVay was an absolute ass to Jared - imagine playing for a coach you tells you Wolford is his guy. McVay hated Jared more than he wanted to win (no coach would play Wolford over a QB cleared to play, as Jared was, in the playoffs if they wanted to win). Jared got the win but I think technically Wolford has the win.

With the exception of Von miller coming in for the final 8 games and a OBJ for 8 games…yes it was the same team.

They had the number 1 defense in 2020. A top 10 run game. A healthy woods, kupp, higbee, jefferson.

Two all star players matter. Plus a coach that hates you and was throwing you under the bus matters (notice no one sat next to Jared on the bench - bully coach makes it impossible to be friends with his target). Not gonna win if your coach is against you. Just not gonna happen.

Those are significant two exceptions and some have argued in the past that those two exceptions were what put the Rams over the top in that Super Bowl year.

The commenter is trying to say that Goff never played on as stacked a team as the super bowl winning rams. Having a top 10 run game and the number 1 defense in football, the same recieving core and offensive line suggests otherwise, at least to me.

And we were not even talking about the rams squad they took to the super bowl we Todd gurley.

Was OBJ an all-star addition in name or reality? 3 balls a 50 yards a game. He had some moments but he hasnt been OBJ since before his first ACL tear.

Obj and von miller were very impactful in the playoff run. Let’s also not forget that stafford almost literally threw that playoff run away if it werent for the dropped int by the i believe 49er safety.

Look i think 33 year old stafford was clearly at a different point in his career than goff at 26 who also played through a broken thumb while winning a playoff game for a coach that threw him squarely under the bus.

But goff and stafford are different qbs that were at different points in their career and development. It worked out for stafford and it likely wouldnt have with goff as he needed to be rebuilt a bit when he came here.

At this point i am over the stafford vs goff conversation as goff is our guy and i am happy with it as he has shown that he can take us to heights that we have never been and that includes stafford. Will it ever end in a superbowl… that remains to be seen.

I actually don’t care to compare them and their teams because I would agree with your overall point that there is a lot of nuance from ownership, coaches, GM, and then the players on the field.

I get the discussion and have no bone to pick on the matter, just saying that calling those two exceptions, is understating it a bit.

Not to mention where the two were in their careers when the trade happened.

Sounds like staffords 2014 season really which was also coincidentally his 26 year old season.
