Yeah, it hasn’t been quite a year yet, has it? I’m glad he came here to tell us of his journey.
Good stuff. They can practice on the left.
This interview is magnificent.
#1. The part of the discussion of an inflection point where his own career turned upward… In middle of 22 he had to focus in on what he could control and be a little less preoccupied on the team’s winning or losing. That meshes with what we seen, IMO. For each of us, athletes and regular Joes, the mental is crucial to our success. Keeping a proper perspective and focus makes all the difference in the world. Volumes have been written on the subject.
#2. He was tossed aside as a failure with an expectation of remaining trash. He’s not going to let that go.
#3. His 2016 interview while in college included 2 goals… win a Superbowl and “to be on a team that wants me”. It’s cool hearing that desire. That’s a window into his soul. That makes the chip on his shoulder from the Rams treatment all the more permanent, and at the same time what breathes new life into him here. Brad Holmes’s faith in this dude is as important as Dan Campbell’s leadership. It resonates with Goff at his very core. More than I realized, but clear in his answer to Garrett 8 years ago.
#4. I can still hardly believe that we actually upgraded from Stafford. This Holmes/Campbell/Goff/Johnson thing is storybook stuff. I don’t know if we’re at this place we’re at right now without each of them and the specific qualities that they’ve brought. What each of them mean to the equation, I just don’t know if we reach the same heights with any one of them changed out for another. Their individual accomplishments is dependent on each other. Freaky.
Oh man, great post
Lionmom, Sheslion and Bittersyd, three great Den posters
Miss BitterSyd, we never met in real life but had some great msging and talks about CFB, MLB and the Lions.
Miss him!
Funny seeing him mentioned here today. Was thinking about him earlier today for some odd reason.
Great insights and love your post!
I’m particularly curious on this quoted section. I feel I have a pretty good sense of Holmes, DC, and Goff individually.
What I don’t know is how much Johnson is responsible for versus DC. We saw DC take over partly end of 21. It got better with Johnson running the whole thing.
I suppose because I feel like we are on borrowed time with Johnson, I’m hoping that while he is good and data driven, I’m hoping that he is the most replaceable piece out of the mentioned quartet. Especially if everything else stays the same like all the players and assistant offensive coaches.
I think we need look no further than Goff’s own comments on Ben. His focus on preparation was one quality, but the first “by far” is his matching play designs and play calling to player’s strengths.
Dan absolutely has offensive and defensive philosophies/vision that are formed from his years in the league under Parcells and Payton. That vision will survive coordinator changes. The same credit that Goff gives BJ for matching plays to talent is the heard from AG about Dennis Allen doing the same on defense. It will always be a priority.
That said, you have a coach in Ben that brought it to fruition here. (Can’t believe I used the most over-used word in the English language, but there it is.) This offense is constructed according to Dan’s vision. This offense will not change much when Ben leaves. But it’s the timing of each of their arrival and ascension that makes what we’ve witnessed so special. As confident as I am that we’re seeing a reflection of Sean Payton in our offense via Dan Campbell, I’m not so sure we reach the heights we’re headed for without all 4 of them being part of the equation. The move from Lynn to someone else may not have been successful. We’re on our 3rd DL coach and 3rd DB coach and have burned through two defensive consultants in Capers and Fox. Not every decision works out. Ben has worked out.
How do we add a toad emoticon to the like button list???
Careful what u wish for… Lol
Even when things were going well w/the Rams, so many fans mistook his even temper and laid back personality for lack of passion.
Not a chance.
I’m not going to fault the fans. I feel like we’re still just getting to know him.
I think the large majority of Lions fans know better at this point. But especially when things started to sour in LA, a lot of fans questioned his passion, his leadership. In general, I think a lot of people only recognize “leadership” when it looks a certain way. Turns out there are a range of ways to lead effectively.
Yea, there were some here that didn’t get it early on as well. Energy can be expressed in many ways and quiet resolve can be difficult to interpret.
Yessir. I had that argument quite a bit back in 2022
I remember
Love how he says “our” city several times. That’s a possessive use of the word.
Also, @BigNatty, you still haven’t apologized for whatever that nonsense was coming out of your mouth.
Top 15-20, love u Natty but this shits wild imo
I could easily Top 10 him.
you think?
There were some ridiculously good articles posted today. That was one of the best interviews I’ve heard in a loooong time. Go Jared Goff!
