But how good is hard to comprehend until you look at some stats.
Since 1970, for single season records
Goff is currently
14th all time in yards per attempt. (9.0)
Record is 9.9
10th all time Passer rating (115.3)
Record is122.5
3Rd! All time comp% (74.1)
Record is 74.4
When you’re wrong, you’re wrong.
At some point, you really should just take it on the chin and admit what is plainly obvious to everyone. - spoken by nobody at ESPN, ever!
An MVP or All-Pro or OPOY selection, not to mention a SB win, would be a HECKUVA f-u and I can’t believe he wouldn’t cherish one or more of those accolades.
But, that said, dude’s about as selfless as a human can be after all he’s been thru.
I won’t take the time to dig into QBR, but I also suspect that it, like most metrics, doesn’t/can’t capture some QB’s biggest strengths.
Two QBs step up behind center facing the same defensive alignment. One executes the play as called from the sideline, completes a 10-yarder w/a moderate degree of difficulty. WR is taken down immediately. 1st down. The second reads the defense, makes adjustments to the protection, changes the play, and completes a wide-open 7-yarder that goes for 25.
To most of us watching from home, the first QB’s pass looks more impressive than the second QB’s, though the second leads to a bigger play. We’re amazed that a receiver can get that wide open and credit the play caller. PFF, or whoever, grades the first QB higher than the second for their respective plays.
But it was the second QB’s superior pre-snap diagnosis and play shift that led to the easy pitch-and-run - and, maybe, the first QB’s lack of similar recognition skills that led to the tougher throw and fewer yds gained.
Jared Goff is quite often that second QB. His brain, along with Ben’s, talent all around, etc., makes this offense thrive. But not in a way that measures like QBR or QB rating can or do capture.
That’s what they’d like you to think, but, they seem to forget how they treated Matt Stafford when he had a team of cast offs around him.
It’s the team! Not the team around Goff.
That, and they all fell for McVay’s bullshit, hook, line, and sinker. They think refusing to own it lets them save face.
Guess what?
The Detroit Lions are the most popular team in the country. You’re not saving face. You look like fools!
And watching tape isn’t enough. You need to know what the original play call was, as well as blocking assignments given the defensive alignment, etc.
Jackson and Allen also have spectacular physical gifts. Often, when pass plays break down they take off, often w/positive results. That shows up on TV and in the rating formulas.
When pass plays break down for Jared, he’s more likely to eat it, throw it away, check it down, etc. Those outcomes also show up on TV and in ratings. What doesn’t show up is the hugely important work he does pre-snap to ensure that plays don’t break down in the first place. Feels to me like he “kills” the play call half the time.
