Jared Goff Reminds Dan Campbell of Drew Brees

Drew Brees won a Super Bowl when Dan Campbell was there …

I have to share this fascinating tidbit about Campbell, but he was injured in preseason, completely vanished from New Orleans for the whole season, and because of that he wasn’t given a ring.

"The Saints also rewarded selected players on the practice squad and injured reserve. For instance, Billy Miller and Mark Simoneau received rings. They stuck around all season, spent time in the locker room and in meetings and attended most of the games. Dan Campbell, who also was placed on injured reserve in the preseason and was rarely seen again, did not. That’s fair.

“I would tell you this right now, had I stayed and been around the team and been a part of it, I would have gotten one,” he said. “So I’m not bitter about that. Shoot, I made my own bed there. But I was also — look, I wasn’t in a good place, either with it. I was frustrated and I just, in my own head, and it’s not right, but I’m like, ‘I didn’t do anything to earn this anyway. I’m not here, I’m not a part of it,’ so it’s all good.”

I find it very interesting that the ultimate high character head coach didn’t do the high character thing and hang around the team even though he was injured. It seems like it’s definitely something he’d hold against a player today.

I’ve got mild face blindness so I don’t want to criticize Campbell unjustly, but Goff is much taller.

I think he knew his career was over from all the injuries and was depressed. He had season ending injuries in 3 straight seasons… Tough pill to swallow. Not to mention had just went 0 and 16 with the Lions :joy:

I’m not the kind of guy to say “I told you so”…

Wait a minute, yes I am!

Jared’s wife has a better personality

I was thinking about this too. Remember Campbell said he will always be straight with his players, because he had a coach lie to him and he remembers how that felt. Is it possible it was someone on New Orleans? He went on injured reserve and missed the season. Remember at that time, if you went on IR, it was automatically a season ender. I wonder if Campbell’s injury was one he felt could come back from, and maybe New Orleans told him they would keep him around to rehab it, then IR’d him anyways?

I am just throwing stuff out there, it’s also very likely it’s what you suggested. I remember Campbell was a good TE for us but he always would get hurt. By that stage in his career, he might have realized this was truly the end of the road, and he needed to step out of football.

Now that I think about it, if it was New Orleans and Payton that lied to him, Campbell would have never stayed on as a coach there. Campbell has said many times how much he appreciates and respects Payton for teaching him how to be an NFL coach.

From 2007 to 2009…he played a total of 3 games out of 48. Tough way to end a career

I see a lot of similarities as well. Both are studious and elite accuracy.

Goff has a better arm and can make more out/deep throws. Brees had a quicker flick release he used a lot in the quick passing game.

Accuracy and quick decision making are the 2 main similarities I see. Both very smart presnap as well.
