Some of those were pretty crazy!

He needs to build chemistry and stick around. That’s amazing.

He’s an easy guy to root for.

what Goff did was impressive but those other two guys were pretty bad.

This makes it harder for me, because I like him so much as a dude. I really wish he was a tougher guy. Every single other aspect of his game is okay for me.

Nothing would make me more thrilled than to see Goff become the QB everyone thought he was coming out. In a strange way, in this moment, Detroit is the perfect place to rebuild a career.

That said, some of his issues last year had little to do with his supporting cast, and more to do with his own talent and leadership. He’s had two head coaches in his professional career, and both have went to the media and publicly demanded more of him. Spin that how you want, it doesn’t look great.

He’ll have every opportunity to succeed next year. If he does, this is a team that looks compelling and worth watching. Maybe not playoffs, but something close to it. But if he resembles his mean, as @JCHeff1979 mentioned in another thread, we’ve got to acknowledge what might be reality.

I know some would bring up Stafford’s struggles here, especially in '14. True. No way of getting around it. But there was never a moment we doubted Matt’s ability. Ever. That isn’t the case with Jared. There’s legit question marks.

Now, you can interpret that as Goff “hate” if you want, but I’m merely trying to approach this season—and the team’s most important position—rationally.

Yup.

Yup.
The comparisons feel really, really misaligned ot me. Not trying to invalidate or discredit anyone, but it honestly feels silly to me.

I have absolutely no doubt that he was having an emotional/mental crisis last year at the beginning of the season.
Think of what the poor guy had just been through. It’s not like he was given any choice.
One second he’s on a contender, the next, he’s in the city where NFL careers die…and his mentor did that to him.
Then, surprise, surprise, the reason Stafford wanted out, came true around him.
You could the change when Josh Reynolds got here. He finally had someone that could really relate that he could talk to.
Look at his demeanor in the last interview before the draft. He’s talking about hanging out with DJ, St. Brown, and JRey. He’s a new man. He’s in a good place, mentally.
He has got to be absolutely thrilled after the draft.
I truly believe he’s going to be more than “okay”.
He’s about to flourish, and he knows it. It’s written all over his face.

No QB in the league was going to be successful given the injuries, lack of surrounding talent and offensive coordination the Lions had at the start of last season. I’m not sure many would have handled it with the grace and poise Goff showed.

Amen, brother!
He was 26…and dealing with a major life crisis.
Cut the kid some slack.
If you’re religious, say a prayer for the kid.

Imagine going from the receiving corps of Hodge, Kennedy, Benson and rookie St Brown to

Williams, Chark, Reynolds and seasoned St Brown

That’s a helluva upgrade. I dare say if the Lions stay healthy the article someone posted some weeks back titled the Lions offense could be unstoppable. (which seemed amusing at the time) could be true

Hell, Chark, Reynolds, St. Brown and Cephus was a hell of an upgrade!
Then in the draft, they got him two more weapons!
And, got 5 solid pieces on defense.
He made it through hell year. Time to kick ass and flip birds!

What if….

He wins comeback player of the year
has a qbr of over 100 all year
is a top five rated QB
wins ten games
wins a playoff game
gets a pro bowl bid

Will all the wives become Gofflings?

If he does that, I’ll buy his jersey and start thinking about which CB and LB the Lions are taking in the first round next year.

I’d love to know, when it was clear that Lynn wasn’t the answer, did Goff step up and say so (in a graceful way) or did DC come to his own conclusion and Goff just went to work the best he could?

It’s hard to be in the position where you know the guy in charge is terrible but there’s nothing you can do about it except speak up to someone higher. Goff was in that position with Fischer but also a rookie with no credibility at that point…

I was thinking that earlier when I was talking about “hell year”.
Jared Goff is a human being. Way more than just a QB.

You just have to continue insults, don’t you? And for the record, insulting wives and women generally says a lot about a man.
