Stafford has successfully run multiple complicated offenses. The Caldwell / Cooter/ Moore offense that we ran was simple in communication so that we could play fast… but just like when Peyton Manning ran it… puts every decision on the QB. The issue was that Lombardi was running the same concepts that he ran with brees and guys like colston… with Stafford and Calvin. He did not fit the scheme to talent at all.
Please, dear Jesus, let this be true…
SB Time REALLY soon, if that’s the case.
Very much enjoyed reading this too, dude. Thanks for your perspective.
Careful now, using facts and daring to compliment a Super Bowl winning quarterback around here will you get labeled “wife.”
(while casually referring to Jared Goff as a top 20 QB in NFL history is accepted as normal)
hahahahahah
hilarious lesson in perspective
Cooter brought back the Linehan offense that was shotgun heavy with lots of quick passes. Easy reads for the QB with CJ running draw routes and Stafford focusing on short passes and screens underneath. Lombardi brought in an intermediate crosser-heavy play-action scheme that required the QB to turn his back to the field and read multiple options depending on defensive looks. It put a lot on the QB
Stafford didnt run it particularly well because he was used to Linehans scheme. But the Oline, wasn’t great in front of him. It was really built to be man blocking and Lombardi was trying to run zone with lots of formation shifts. That year PFF ranked it 24th
Goff does have some pretty gaudy stats for his age. Wins, yardage, multiple Pro Bowl births and a Super Bowl appearance. But I’m not sure even the most hard core Goffling would realistically claim he is a top 20 QB of all time
Just a ridiculous take that his issues last year were not mostly about his supporting cast! Literally the minute he was given ANY help he was the third rated passer in the NFL the rest of the way, with a rookie WR leading the way. I get that it is a small sample size, but the play early in the season is IMPOSSIBLE to judge.
I just don’t get how anyone could have watched the first half of the season and thought, golly if they could just get a QB they would be good! The Lions were running an all new offense, with all new players and coaches, and the least experienced WR corps ever assembled on an NFL team. Then they had injuries. The coaches admitted some receivers were running incorrect routes early in the season. With a good supporting cast it would have taken some time, and Goff clearly did not have a good supporting cast early last season.
I would also say that at this stage of Goff’s career (after 6 seasons) he is absolutely comparable to where Stafford was at. Goff is coming off a season with a coaching staff that appears to have helped him a lot. Caldwell absolutely corrected issues in Stafford’s game in year 6 as well.
I will once again go on record that I see Goff nailing it this year.
There are some parallels there, and that has been pointed out. In 2013 Staffords play collapsed and he played terrible in the second half of what should have been our first division title year in ages. In 2014 Stafford was thoroughly uninspiring and to start 2015 he was pretty bad. The benching week 6 in 2015 seems to have made something ‘click’ in Stafford
That was his seventh year. This coming year will be Goffs seventh. If he progresses, recovers his confidence and on this team with its supportive staff and these weapons around him…at the risk of sounding like a Goffling, he could very well be a top tier QB once again
Also, Dan Campbell rightfully demanded more of an entire team including the QB. At the same time he admitted the team was short on talent. This can be painted in a negative light, but in reality the entire team and QB responded, making this a positive indication for our QB in my opinion.
I agree. I see it happening too. Goff is a far better QB than he is getting credit for. When he does this I hope he takes us to, and wins, a Super Bowl, and then takes team friendly extensions like Brady did!
I will say this, all the NAUSEATING love for Stafford from Lions fans makes me root even more for Goff. Every time I see that commercial I throw up in my mouth a bit.
To be clear, I am a huge Stafford fan but I am just SICK of the narrative. Just me. Don’t care if you agree or disagree, I live here, it’s repugnant. Doubling down.

I love this. Wish there was more of it.

Also, stating that McVay “publicly demanded more” of Goff is a very pro-McVay way of putting what happened. I think it is more accurate to say that McVay is a “system” coach and he threw Goff under the bus and blamed him for all of his own coaching and system deficiencies.
There were clear issues with the roster that Goff was working with the last 2 years in LA including a below average running game, protection issues, and a lack of speed at WR.
Additionally, Goff showed a lot of leadership and character with the way he handled that entire situation. He didn’t go public and point the blame elsewhere, but just took care of his own business. This included winning a road playoff game in Seattle with no practice because of McVay’s choices - a game Goff played with a steel pin inserted into his swollen thumb on his throwing hand.
PREACH.
And that’s why I’m a Lions fan now instead of the Rams fan I was for 40+ years.
I cannot support a team led by Sean McVay.
What he also doesn’t do is throw to the correct read and focuses on the easiest throw way to offten. He did this for 10 Games, before he got called out by his coach, then started to take a different approach to the game. And something Matt will never do that Goff does is throw the ball out of bounds on 4th Down. twice
This was partly due to Goff not knowing we’re to go with the ball or being afraid to let it loose
Yeah how can you support a guy that said the QB needed to play better then went out and Got one that could play better and won the Superbowl. Why would you root for the guy that proved so many wrong.
There were a few other things going on in those first ten games that, imo, impacted how Goff played. I have no issue saying he took the easiest read early on, but I also think that had a lot to do with WR carousel in those ten games. WR struggling with separation and running bad routes. So Campbell called out Goff but he called out other players on offense as well which is something many ignore.
The different approach you link to him being called out may have more to do with change in OC and plays being called - making him and WR more effective. And, lest we forget, Decker.

That’s just Koolaid, he got benched or hurt sat and then the bye week with Campbell calling him out , he came back and wasn’t checking down and started slinging it like a real QB. And everyone started getting better. Some want to pretend that after the by he instantly had this whole new repour with his WRs and everyone instantly got better. He made them better by him playing better throwing to the correct read instead of the easiest throw.
Ok.
