I thought Rod was very good. Interesting stories, good sense of humor and solid baseball info from his playing days.
Plus he tried to WITH EVERY OUNCE OF HIS BEING to kill some Japanese dude.
Bonus points for Yakety Sax and the triple stop action closeup of Pure Terror on the Japanese pitchers face
Like Harry Caray?
Rod was going ape shit like that dude stole his chair.
I think he is trying to find his schtick and rhythm. Honestly yesterday was the first time I hear him because I haven’t watched NOT ONE Tiger game until then. I thought they had rehired Impemba but as I kept listen Jason is not as sharp or as witty as Impemba was. But I understand if he goes off on tangents as you say he does….i just would take it a lil different than you.
IOW, I’m old grumpy guy.
I’m good with that.
Best thing is, Sunday, i will be in the ballpark so no announcers…
I think you hit the nail on the head on what was bothering me. This is probably the underlying thing, and it manifests as boring rambles during the game, while Petry or Gibby are looking at him in disbelief. Like - let your own little tangent go, and pay attention to the Tigers, please.
Well Petry and Gibby are more invested in the Tigers because they played here and won a World Series here. Does Jason have any background ties to the Tigers?? I mean it’s his first year so it’s probably gonna take time for him to get into the Tigers the way fans want to hear. Especially with the Tigers having been so bad and with no legit star players on the team. For play-by-play guys…stars bring out the best in their broadcasting. I mean, again, not saying you guys are wrong because I have only heard Jason once since he’s been here. But the one game I did watch he seemed to generate some excitement in his calls in that 8-2 win over the Cubs the other night.
I don’t hate the guy but there’s definitely something missing, imo. He’s like an unsalted steak…ok but could be so much better. He’s that friend who doesn’t watch sports but is sitting next to you on the couch babbling about off topic items while the bases are juiced in the bottom of the ninth inning and 2012 Miguel Cabrera is at the plate. He tends to go off on comedic tangents that aren’t necessarily comedic. His booth mates seem uncomfortable at times between nervous laughter and attempting to keep the not-so-funny jokes going. I think he’s a nice guy and I commend him for overcoming his disability. But at this time, I just find it hard to foresee him becoming an all-time beloved, great announcer for the Detroit Tigers. Perhaps some big moments and meaningful games will change the way I view him. I guess time will tell.
What did he overcome?
Dickerson last night was a nice change of pace.
He has cerebral palsy
Allow me to correct myself…Tarik Skubal is a star
The Tigers have a few young players that are on their way to being stars imo.
I think Keith and Meadows are getting close, and Greene is already there.
Also, the late game comeback thing they got going on has been really fun to watch.
This is a really scrappy team that never quits. In some ways they remind me of the Lions from a couple years ago.
No argument there, my friend
Next year, let’s please not talk about trading him again. I was ready to lose it this past year.
I think there will trade rumors again this winter then, hopefully, it will settle down.
Thanks for the post, gotta root for the guy.
Nice post and great video by Jason. Just to clarify, I think he does an OK job with the Play-by-play announcing. Just sometimes he does go off on some strange and prolonged tangents. I suppose it’s to be expected when you’re doing 130 games or whatever he’s doing per year. They can’t all be Dan Dickerson‘s call of Maglio‘s three run homer to get us into the World Series. I remember reading he was beloved in Chicago before he came here. I’m certainly willing to give him more time. Overall, I think I would grade him as a solid seven with potential. And again, I commend him for overcoming his disabilities. There’s probably a lot of doors that were shut for him based on those disabilities. So kudos to Jason.
Bro I hear exactly what you’re saying. There’s been some tangents and stuff like that, but I think he’ll settle in well. I like Dan Petry as his sidekick, but he’s had several others I liked as well.
