Jim Schwartz resigns from Browns

It’s not about a head coaching job, it’s about refusing to stay with an employer you feel is treating you wrong.

Is it really? Or is it because they didn’t name you head coach… People get passed up for promotions all the time. Most don’t quit their job out of frustration. He uses emotion instead of logic and that’s not what anyone wants in a head coach.

How many owners tell their coaching candidates that their current coordinator must stay on? It’s the reason some pulled their names out of contention. I don’t know what all was said in his interview, but from others in the building he was clearly led to believe he had the job. Then they moved to Monken, who doesn’t seem to be too interested in Schwartz. It’s an arranged marriage by leadership that doesn’t know how to lead. Perhaps some would stay in a similar situation, but I don’t believe most people would.

The fair thing to do, just like every other team would do, is to let him move on. The Browns are not normal. This is not how these situations usually go.

Put language in the contract that says if there is a head coaching change you don’t approve of, you are free to leave the team any time before so and so date. Whenever you sign a contract, you need to make sure it works for you. Some people don’t even read them. I go over them with a fine tooth comb. I recently bought a house and I made them change all kinds of language I didn’t like in there. It’s worth the time to me.

Yes, the sanctity of contracts in sports.

I have seen alot of people leave their job after getting passed over for a particular promotion/position.

That language in the contract is only required with the Cleveland Browns. I’m sure other Browns candidates will be sure to include it in the future. For other organizations its professional courtesy to have the HC and existing DC agree to work together. If the existing DC wants out, they mutually part ways.

Usually after they find a new job, sure. That would be a normal reaction.

Maybe he’s content with just riding off into the sunset.

There are worse things in life than being able to retire at 60 years old.

Dunno. Seems like it would be easier than ever for a pro coach to go to college. Don’t have to worry about recruiting, just hire a great GM to sign your players

Yup. Someone from the NFL needs to call Haslam and “recommend” he release Schwartz from his contract

If they would have let him, he would have a new job and we could call it normal.

Nah, let them implode.

I’m sure the Browns wish contracts were optional. Would help a lot with Deshaun Watson situation. But they’re not. They’re legally binding documents.

Then why isn’t the rest of Stefanski’s staff there? It wasn’t as legally binding for the rest of the staff? Schwartz was treated different than any other assistant on the ten teams that dismissed their head coaches, but he’s supposed to act like he isn’t being treated different? Sure

As I understand league rules, the Browns could not prevent Schwartz from taking a head coaching position (promotion), which is what he was seeking from the Browns. It appears to just be a straight temper tantrum from my living room.

I’m baffled that you’re defending the browns organization.

For sure. At a certain level in most organizations, there’s definitely an “up or out” dynamic in play.

In most companies, if the CFO and COO are up for the CEO job and the board gives it to an outsider, both of those individuals are going elsewhere.

What would happen if they end up the first tileam to go winless twice

@socko is just frustrated these days. He’s on a low paint chip diet and it’s clearly impacting his mood.

Plus his dvd player is on the fritz so he can’t watch his favorite documentaries anymore. :joy:
