Jimmy Rolder

Am I mistaken or are the bread crumbs suggesting this may be Brad’s first day 3 steal in a while? First in a while pending on how the two day 3 Guards turn out.

I have 0 belief that Rolder year 1 will be able to replace Anzalone, however he may not be a drastic drop off from last years Anzalone. If that happens great but i have more faith in mahogany or frazier being able to be a guy at Guard this year.

I wasn’t meaning to place a timeline on it.

Just the instant gratification culture coming out i suppose… career potential wise i likely agree with you but i am also a michigan slappy so theres that

OTA chatter about him seems exceedingly positive.

The linebacker group is interesting. Cause they are talking about playing more Nickel. So only 2 linebackers on the field more often. Jack Campbell is clearly one of them. The second spot is really wide open

Did you play LB when you played ball?

Yep

That is what I remembered. So what drives you most crazy about our LB play as a former LBer?

Good question. Missed tackles for sure is up there. I actually kinda feel bad for the linebackers in coverage cause Shep keeps having them play cover 0 with some brutal mismatches. That’s a nightmare for a linebacker trying to cover skill guys with speed in space. Hopefully with more Nickel that happens less often. With the loss Anzalone, don’t really have a good coverage backer.

I disagree bud

It’s Jack & Barnes 2 man show with Rodrigo rotating in occasionally.

Love the Jimmy Rolder pick. He fits the Scweschinger/Golday mold that I coveted last couple drafts.

And he’s hometown kid with ties to Hutch & Moore (Derrick not Sherron)

But we used Barnes on the LOS as a pass rusher last year a lot. That would be a very different role for him you are describing. And he isn’t a good cover guy. I don’t know how it shakes out

Well one thing that I think UM does very well is bring in athletes. So grabbing a LB from their crew gives you hope he will be fast and athletic.

It is OK to be a slappy…LOL

I just recalibrate once everyone hits the NFL because it is just a different beast all together.

I actually thought K9 would injure out of the NFL. As they say availability is an ability. But he somehow sign a fat second contract which is shocking to me. I actually preferred Chab in Seattle. A way more complete back. Walker is a 1 dimensional dude. He does not have great hands nor does he block well. And he will miss a few games a season of more due to some weird inury IMO. Interesting enough he played all 17 games last season but also split carries all season soooo. I am expecting a bust level KC year next season. He is great as long as he does not get hit…LOL

But he did have one hell of a senior season at MSU and single handedly won that game against UM so he will always have that. But conversely he is also the reason MSU went and gave Tuck all the money…sooooooo  what a joke

Do you feel like we don’t break down properly before the tackle? Don’t know how it compares to other teams. It just feels like we’re often out of control when trying to bring down the ball carrier.

Yep, he will be “one” of the 2/3 LB’s in due time if stays healthy

I loved Anzalone and what he brought to the team. But he didn’t break down or wrap up much at all. Just threw his body at ball carriers. Which often worked but lead to some bad whiffs too. Also a great way to get injured. Barnes too as we know whiffs at times. I think he’s just out of control at times. Jack is the opposite, very fundamentally sound, and a sure tackler.

He loved that rugby style drag down tackle. I do think we’ll see more and more of that. I know towards the end of his Seahawks run Carroll was teaching it to prevent head injuries.

Also of note tackling is rarely practiced anymore. Just walkthroughs and half speed. And then in the game here comes a 235 pound running back like Derrick Henry trying to run you over so all bets are off

“Number of tackles” get a bad rap. People’s common reply is, yeah but is it eight yards down field? I say, sure, there will be some of them, but its better than a missed tackle.

I think one of the problems with LB play (esp. at the HS level) is that guys repeatedly go for the big hit, so they can put it on their highlight reel to college coaches, who fall for it, because they don’t know about the 50% missed tackle rate. Who keeps track of missed tackles in HS?
