A small sample from the 30 or so memories from Detroit she posted on her instagram today.
Once you let the cynicism die, this family truly bought into Detroit. We’ve had big time players here who feigned interest but rented and never bought. And remember, they just donated a few million a couple weeks ago, with more on the way.
The medical care Kelly got here and the way the city rallied around her and embraced the Staffords will forever outweigh the gravity of football and it will never be close. Everything you said in the OP is spot on.
I appreciate what Matt Stafford was here in Detroit. He’ll forever be a Lion.
I also appreciate Kelly, her spirit and what she’s overcome.
But the day for really embracing them as “Forever Detroit” is not upon us. That relationship is on hiatus for as long as he wears another uniform.
It’s not complicated. Stafford is the last best QB from a 60 year legacy of failure. The same legacy that claimed the spirit of Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson.
This is a new day. This is a new legacy. This is the team we support and cheer on.
I’d been called a wife (among other things) and I still have his jersey hanging in the man-cave. But the fondness for the QB he was here is as easily boxed away as this year’s Christmas decorations.
Stafford is always welcome back in Detroit, unless he knocks the Lions out of the playoffs next week. Fans won’t feel the same. It has been too long since a playoff victory.
It used to be FTP, but we exorcised that demon this year.
For the past couple weeks, its been:
FTC
FBA
Now, I hate to say it, but this week its:
FMS, FSM
and FTR
disclaimer: Matt is a good guy. But McVay is not…
I understand you just want us to win and be done with it-but F Matt Stafford? no. No matter what I can not hate him -nor do I feel some sort of way about him, I wish Matt great success. no matter where he is or what he does-and if and when we do beat him? I’m sure he would be happy and excited for The Lions as well then go on focusing on his life and responsibilities both on and off the field.
