Definitely positive that he’s studying good teams and trying to improve. Dan Campbell has apparently spent a ton of time on the defense this off-season too which he stated he hasn’t done much of in the past.
More zone coverage, more disguise, more nickel (which seems inevitable), and MORE stunting. It was unbelievable how much more the best teams in the league used stunts to generate a rush compared to the rest of the league.
I am going to try to choose peace on this topic until the season starts.
MCDC has rolled out crap defenses 4 of 5 seasons and now suddenly he is interested…when if you do not have a top half defense you will not win the SB or least that is what the numbers tell us. So I am struggling to grasp that he is just now paying attention to that side of the ball. Either he is lying or he is kind of an idiot or he truly believed “we good”.
Defense is super tough to coach and shut down other teams with todays rules. But the teams that win know how to get stops in the 4th Quarter. And the NFL has become a bit like the NBA where the winning and losing is done the last 1/4 of the game. And the big key is getting stops when needed.
A ton of questions on that side of the ball personnel wise so it does feel like as the defense goes so goes the teams success this season for sure.
I am 100% confident that as long as Goff is the QB this offense will be solid. He is that good. To be elite he like all QBs will need an OLine that is crushing it but Goff will keep this offense respectable.
100% on all of this!!! We were the most predictable and easy to plan for defense last season. Honestly any one of your suggestions would be a welcome change and make us more effective. Add a couple and we will be cooking with gas.
Those things combined with the rate we simulate pressure would make this defense elite. I have no doubt about that.
The other team needs to not be able to figure out what we’re in. That goes for pretty much every good defense.
And as for the personnel thing, I believe I said it best earlier this offseason when I said “Our philosophy makes sense in theory, but other teams get better results when faced with the same problems using different personnel.” In other words, we use base so much so other teams won’t run it down our throat and be able to use jumbo packages and such, but the Seahawks just had an elite run defense playing two high out of nickel almost all of the time.
Fair points. Dan has definitely been more focused on offense so far. Then again all his background playing and coaching has been on the offensive side. He appeared to trust AG a ton. Petzing has experience calling plays so hopefully that frees up Campbell to spend more time helping Shep.
in the end it comes down to having good players, how many of our defenders can start for Seattle or Houston
I guess it’s better than him sitting with his thumb up his ass
That’s what Patricia used to do. It might have been his pencil up his ass instead of his thumb.
Always with the butt stuff.

I miss AG. I loved the scheme especially the run stopping. I don’t think people understand how important that was. AG’s best season was his last when he finally had a hair of the players needed to run his scheme.
I’m losing faith in Shepp. This article actually bothers me. I was a big defender of Shepp nd always pointed out the bandwagon fans that sang his praises for most of the season and feared he’d leave . I guess we’ll see.
A good scheme doesn’t require four years worth of roster building to be any sort of good.
Brilliant. If you find you are like running the most base 4-3 plays by like 10X compared to the next highest base 4-3 team… maybe you aren’t crazy like a fox. You’re just not being smart.
No offense, but I highly doubt you were a AG supporter when he was here. And if you were, it’s because the majority were not.
I am starting to realize you literally take the stance of against the grain on literally everything. If you were a journalist you would be a contender for a spot on ESPNs First Take
is that still a show?
You have him figured out! I figured it out last year after constant whining about same 3 things.
so a year after he was hired he’s looking at how to run a defense.
Cool.
Cool cool cool.
Wouldn’t you think that a great DC would study other defenses all the time to learn and evolve? Disappointing so see he is just starting to do this…. Head in the sand…
