Tackling the upper body is the way they did it for years. Hit them hard, wrap them up, and bring them down. There’s nothing flag football about it.
You wrap at the waist and slide down.
No coach ever taught upper body tackling!
Upper body tackling will lead to head slams.
I think the timing was just the unfortunate part. If his leg didn’t get stuck as he planted its nothing. It’s the speed of the game. Most players go low on TEs its why several TEs have started hurdling players.

Whatever my point is you can’t hit the head, you won’t be able to hit the legs soon, you’ve got to make the upper body from the shoulders to the waist as an option. Otherwise the defense will have nowhere to hit. I’m not talking about technique at all.
But right now, 9 times out of 10, that’s a defenseless receiver penalty.
Football is a violent sport.
