Kerby Joseph contract?

He’s one of the core guys for sure, so I think the Lions should/will extend him this offseason. They seem to take care of their own that have earned it like Sewell and St. Brown.

He will be going into the last year of his contract in 25 .

So my question is, will he be the highest paid safety in the league or top 5ish?? He seemed to have earned it even with the pro bowl snub.

Well, apparently the rest of the league hates him, does that work in our favor?

They all hated suh too… until they signed him.

Just saying

Antonio Winfield is currently the highest paid safety in 2024.
Does Kerby take the lead? I hope not. I’d like to see him in the top 3 if he signs a year early. $20M a year sounds about right. Ouch! Branch is not far behind.

He becomes the highest paid Safety in the NFL. Lock it up. We know BH at this point. If he backed the truck up for Alim like he was one of the best DT’s in the NFL, he’ll certainly do it for a guy who actually IS one of the best Safeties in the NFL.

This is correct… KJ will be paid for what he is, the #1 safety in the league.

They hate him being on our team. Like they hated Suh.
They’ll pay top dollar to have him on theirs.

I was looking at this and other S contracts a few weeks ago. There is a significant variance. Aside from Winfield, it seemed like there was a little bit of a market correction on Safeties.

I think Holmes will make Kerby the highest paid Safety this offseason at about $22M AAV before Kyle Hamilton sets a higher bar.
Then Branch will get a little more at about $25M AAV the following offseason.

I think an early extension will allow Brad and Kerby to find the right point of agreement.

This year is by far his best season, following the worst of his 3 while playing somewhat injured last season. Is this season a blip? Probably not, but getting a chunk of guaranteed money before playing out his 4th season should have a lot of appeal to him. Say, he suffers an ACL injury like Alim, or worse an Achilles tendon injury like Tracy Walker next November. Such is life in the NFL.

He wants to be here with Dan and Friends. He turned 24 in November and will likely take another big swing at a contract in a few years. The guaranteed money at signing will make it happen.

Kerby will likely be a $20m AAV contract. Top guys are at 7-7.5% of the cap. So that would equate to just over 20m

$18.5M APY, I think Winfield is an outlier.

This↑ we have him for another 3 years if we used FT. If we are willing to get him a new contract a year early and give him a boatload of signing cash, he needs to be willing to settle for a bit less $$.
KJ is a 3rd round pick, never been paid 10’s of Millions. Signing a new contract 3 years early and pocketing a signing bonus of 20-22 MILLION has to appeal to him.

Do we really think we locking up both KJ and BB?

If no,
Which one do all of you want to keep?

I love both but man it’s hard to imagine both of them. Eventually good players will have to walk for cap purposes won’t they?

Talent wise you want to keep them together obviously, but man, 40mil a year for the safety position? Is that even realistic at all?

We’ll have to let people walk, but neither Kerby or Branch.

That’s the question I am asking. I’m not saying I’m opposed to keeping both. Would love it. I just think paying everyone becomes a cap nightmare

Fair enough. You are the cap wizard so I almost tagged you in it.

Realistically do you think we can lockup Hutch and our safeties?

If $ gets tight Kerby is more important and home grown. Extend Kerby even if we lose Carlton Davis.

We do have resources available and I hope we’re-sign Kerby (who has a rookie year left on his contract so an extension isn’t necessary technically), re-sign Iffy (should be very affordable), DT Levi O. ( I think a reasonable deal gets done) and then Zeitler before Carlton Davis.

Amik Robertson has another year left on his deal.

Branch and Kerby should retire Lions.

Arnold has four years left on a rookie deal (with 5th year extension) and we have Rakestraw for three more seasons.

Paying good players isn’t a “cap nightmare.” Paying guys who don’t perform or guys who are always injured is what creates a tricky cap situation. If you look at how our players are coming up for their contracts, it is staggered. That allows us to manage the money situation for each of them.
