I’m a big Faulk fan, but Verse was a lot more productive. I think with Faulk the hope is an Arik Armstead type. Maybe Rousseau (but a better athlete) if he sticks at edge.
See I think Dunker is the most overrated guy on that line (though I agree we’ll love his demeanor). I don’t think I’d take him before day 3. He lumbers, I don’t think he has the feet to survive in the league.
Now Beau Stephens, Logan Jones and especially Kade Pieper, those guys are legit. I think Pieper will probably go back to school so he can shift over to center, and I think he could be the next Linderbaum. He might be my favorite offensive lineman in all of college football. Stephens is one of those guys who will go late, earn a starting job quickly, then end up holding onto it for ten years.
I think he’s more athletic than Rousseau personally, though crazy juice will never be his calling card. The concern really is you’re drafting a tweener rather than an edge or a 3t, and generally you can find those guys later like Saivion Jones and Elijah Roberts last year. Faulk is a better prospect than both guys, but he has yet to find his niche.
We both loved this kid in the draft for the Lions… He’s been inactive all season. I know Denver has some good depth there, but I’m shocked he can’t crack the gameday roster
He has a lot of irrational love from the draft community based on his smashmouth attitude, ginger mullet, and Trevor Sikkema’s exaggerated influence. He’s an easy guy to like but man, when you watch him he just doesn’t move like an NFL guy. In fact watching him next to all those other NFL players on the line is somewhat eye-opening.
I was actually a little more lukewarm on Sai’vion than some on here, though admittedly that’s when he was being bandied about as a 2nd rounder. At the very end of the 3rd I would have been fine with him. More than fine, that was a little below where I had him ranked. @Jman and @BubbaBaker-60 really liked him though.
Big, linear athlete who struggles to change direction. That’s what I see with both Proctor and Manu. Certainly Proctor has more of a pedigree, but do you think he will test better than Manu did?
There were two guys I liked last year when they were very under rated early on like not even on draft boards. That was Sai Vion and Ingram Dawkins from Georgia who the Vikings took in the 5th round. Dawkins is in the rotation for the Vikings and doing well. I thought Jones was an odd fit for Denver and they look at him more as a 3T DT. I thought both of these guys fit that big DE profile that we look for that we could take in the 3rd round with the comp pick. Jones really started to get a lot of attention after his week at the senior bowl. I still think he would be a much better fit with us than in Denver.
I really wanted to like Faulk this year and after watching 3 games there is no way I’m drafting him in the top half of the 1st round. I will keep watching through the process because he does fit that physical profile we look for.
I agree that Faulk hasn’t popped the way anyone hoped this season. Auburn’s struggles haven’t helped, him being the only guy the opposing offense focuses on hasn’t helped, and I his position versatility has probably harmed him more than helped him this year.
But he’s still only 20, and I think a lot of his issues stem from inexperience and learning to use his strength. He’s just not very savvy yet. And he’s got all the intangibles we look for. Relentless motor. Team captain and celebrated leader. He’s also started to play better the past few weeks.
I think he’s a very good athlete, not an elite one, but otherwise there’s a lot to like about his game. You’d be making a bet on ceiling though as early as he’s gonna go.
He’s testing every week on the field. He will be the youngest OT taken in the draft. There is ceiling and he is smart and coachable. I expect wherever he goes that he ends up moving to the right side and that he is likely to need more time than more experienced/older OL to adapt. But, once that light turns on he has unbelievable ceiling. Testing/RAS, well there is an UDFA LT that scored a 3.25 and just got a 3 year 57 million dollar deal. ON the field is what I’m interested in.
And on the field I don’t think he has the change of direction to be a 1st rounder, which I’ve said many, many times. It’s why I have him listed as a guard.
I understand the pros. I’ve admitted he has some serious linear explosiveness, the coaches like him, etc… Seems like a good kid. Plays with the kind of mean streak you like to see, and he’s a mountain of a man. I can admit all of the things he does well. But for me, those positives don’t outweigh the negatives enough to make him a 1st rounder. Maybe not even a 2nd.
So, I would like to know what you think about the weaknesses he shows on the field? I keep bringing them up but you never seem to address them. Do you think he’ll become a good enough mover as he loses weight, thus making it moot? Do you expect him to lose weight? Do you think I’m seeing things, or that his change of direction issues aren’t as bad as I think? He’s an interesting prospect to debate because the community is so split on him (though even his fans have dropped him to the back half of the first of late), but I would at least like to have the debate.
I can also admit I might be very wrong on him. I’m wrong all the time.
So obviously one-off clips aren’t great because everyone has bad plays, plus it’s the down-to-down stuff where I have concerns that isn’t gonna be posted on socials (95% of them are of him carrying the ball), but I’ll try and cut them out as I watch full games. But these are at least examples of his slow-footed response time that I find is all over his tape, and imo why to me you just can’t leave him outside.
Now his tape is also littered with really good plays (especially in the run game). Just because I’m not as high on him as others doesn’t mean I don’t like him at all, especially if he loses weight and improves his lateral juice. I’m just worried that one of his weaknesses will be his undoing just like it has been for most of the guys his size (see below), despite all the good he brings.
Most of the players with his profile have really whiffed of late. Mailata is about the only tall, heavy guy who hasn’t had to shift inside to become a viable pro. Faalele, Becton, Dawand Jones, Leonard Davis, Aaron Gibson, Neal, etc… Only Trent and Orlando Brown have survived outside, and they’ve only been serviceable at best (and both have bounced around the league).
Now saying that, I really liked Amarius Mims who was similarly large (and has started to play really well of late), BUT the whole reason I liked him was due to preternatural change of directions skills for a man that size.
Look, I’ve seen plenty of guys move inside who were can’t miss OT’s. Just from IOWA there’s Robert Gallery and Brandon Scherff. And I’ve also seen guys get labeled as too linear and then go undrafted, Alairic Jackson who had 32.5” arms and is the starting Left Tackle until his suspension hits for the Rams. He is 6’7” and 345, not far off Proctor. So you have a bad game for Proctor, first game of the season. Since then, let’s be real, there’s a reason he is being ranked by Dane and others where he’s at. It’s a good draft for OT’s, if he’s gone there will still be some good options.
