The Detroit Lions have been receiving a vast amount of praise after clinching their first division title since 1993.
Head coach Dan Campbell burst onto the national scene with an introductory press conference that immediately set the tone for his regime.
While it is expected opposing fanbases will make excuses and downplay Detroit’s success in 2023, a former NFL wide receiver has yet to buy in to what the Lions could accomplish in the postseason.
On the latest edition of SiriusXM’s “Lets Go” NFL recap show, former wideout Larry Fitzgerald indicated it was challenging to get excited about this year’s team.
“Jim, look, you can say that I’m the Grinch right now, but a team that hasn’t won a division championship since 1993, it’s hard for you to take them that serious,” Fitzgerald said. "It’s just been a long time coming. Yes, they’re playing really well but they are the Detroit Lions, Jim.
I’ve always liked Fitzgerald as a player and he seems like a good guy but what a garbage take. You can’t them serious because they’re the Lions, WTF does that even mean? What does this team have to do with the last 30 years of Lions teams?
I guess we shouldn’t have taken the Cardinals serious when he was playing because they were trash before he was there.
Takes like that just get my blood boiling. It’s lazy and weak, not that we should care what he thinks but just a general sentiment about “They’re the Lions so nobody will ever take them seriously”.
IMO it’s fairly common for great players to not do their research when doing media gigs bc they can fall back on the “you don’t know hall” when criticized for it.
Raised in Minnesota, Fitzgerald was — imagine this — a fan of the Vikings, so much so that he was actually a ball boy for the team.
“I grew up a Vikings fan and I would be lying to you if I didn’t say I was still a Vikings fan,” Fitzgerald told the Cardinals’ team website last year. “Growing up in Minnesota it’s second nature. I still pull for them when I’m not playing them. A lot of my closest friends in the NFL are Vikings."
Oh, the team that hasnt won a chamionship since before the UN was created? When the US still was the only one with nukes? Before Miracle in 34th Street was yet to hit the theaters?Diary of Anne Frank was published? Before the Marshall Plan? India was still.a part if the British Empire and Pakistan and Bangladesh didnt exist. Neither did the US AIr Force or CIA. No one had broken the speed of sound and the AK-47 wasnt yet made.
David Bowie, Coach K, Elton John, Rob Reiner, Kateem, Iggy Pop, OJ, Ahhhnold and Larry David werent yet people.
Al Capone, Henry Ford, Seabiscuit,Georg Von Trapp and Bugsy Siegel were squeezing out their last days.
I dont need no guy whose team last won in a year that was closer in time to Boss Tweed, Carpetbaggers and The Great Chicago Fire…where General Custer still had 5 years to live…than to today…telling me about losing streaks.
My only issue with his take is it’s lazy as hell. No analysis, no discussion about defense or anything else. Just “they haven’t won anything so the odds are they won’t win anything now.”
I like Larry but sometimes you just have to think about what you say before you say it. It’s a great rule in life that has kept me out of shitty situations many times and I don’t have a camera in my face.
