Lions appear to have Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor on NFL draft radar

Stuff like this makes me wonder if some GMs just get too attached to certain universities when it comes to scouting and drafting.

If people want to draft Proctor to move him to guard, I’d rather just take Olaivavega Loane and not look back.

Yeah you want a strong interior, Sign Linderbaum, Draft Loane with Tatter. Buddy that is a interior you can run behind. With Sewell and if Decker still here .

I’m lukewarm on Lindenbuam… I’d be fine if he signs, but I think he’d come at too high of a cost. I’d rather trade a late round pick for Hjalte Froholdt

I’m ok with either , I put Linderbaum because of his run blocking and ability to get to the 2nd level. He fits what they want to do

Can you promise us 2024 Fano?

You know @thats2 is blind, right?

Kind of weird that he’s not higher on Brailsford.

i love giant OTs who dismantle who they’re playing. He fits the DC and BH guy like a glove. He’s a top 10 pick in most micks right now. I also believe Brad wanted Booker. Without a doubt Brad has been truing to keep this OL elite but it hasnt worked out.

There is no promises in the NFL

Virtually all of the giant OTs have not succeeded though, with one glaring exception. Many have busted (Becton, Neal, Mike Williams, Leonard Davis, Shawn Andrews, all the way back to Gibson). Faalele has been middling and had to move inside to guard, Dawand Jones has been alright but can’t stay healthy. On and on.

About the best you can hope for is someone like Trent Brown, Orlando Brown or Bryant McKinnie, who are/were fine but also bounced around teams and struggled in some cases to keep their weight down.

I think the main reason for this is twofold: 1) they’re just TOO tall and thus struggle with leverage, and this is exacerbated on the edge with defensive ends who are quick and can really get low, and 2) their feet just aren’t quick enough to stay in front of their guys. Their length mitigates this somewhat, but as with the case of the guys listed above, not enough. It also takes a few of them a minute to get going in the run game. Markel Bell is even bigger than Proctor (6’9, 345), but he really doesn’t move anyone in the run game until the guard next to him helps him get started. Then he can bury a guy, but that’s a pretty big disadvantage.

The ONE exception thus far is Jordan Mailata, but he also ran an insanely freakish 6.66 3-cone, which is maybe the most impressive number of all time. This is not a lumbering oaf. And I’m still holding out hope for Amarius Mims, but the reason I liked him was that, unlike the others, he actually did have light feet. And he played more consistently with good leverage.

Jonathan Ogden is one of the greatest of all-time 6’9 345lbs. That is who i always think of with big OT’s. That’s the guy i would want over anyone else. The point is having that mauler. I also prefer the big DT’s, big DE’s, big LB’s, CB’s who tackle, etc. I want a team full of Jack Campbell’s at every position.

I don’t have a list of who are the biggest OT’s who were medicore, or that didn’t pan out, but the idea of having these physical monsters is what i like. Right now Proctor is a top 10 pick in all mocks, and he plays for Bama, and Lions have interest. That’s good enough for me as of now. I also read he has a bad work ethic so thats a red flag. But I’m not going to pretend i know better because I know nothing, or go as far as being super upset over a player. I think if they picked WR or TE then i’d be upset.

Personally, I think pick 17 is the same as pick 32. I’d prefer they trade back a few spots to gain a 3rd. They need picks.

I really don’t want it to be Proctor after doing a little digging. He just feels like a potential bust or eventual guard to me. Even if I thought he could be a Mekhi Becton at 17 I would pass (and I LOVED him coming out).

A trade back and still going OT in the first is my ideal draft scenario. I doubt it happens as BH has only done it once to my memory (Gibbs). As long as we end up with a legit tackle prospect in round 1 or 2 (prefer 1) I will be happy.

Tackle in round 1 is must if Decker does in fact decide to hang them up. And if he does do that, please please please move Penei to the left side. So much easier to find a NFL ready RT in the draft.

F-ck it just move up and get Bain, he could fall enough to make it possible or move up and Get Fano but he is going to go high.

Move down a bit and take OT Caleb Tiernan

I’ve lamented a lack of nuance in general so I figured I should add some here.

For one, I think you are underrating body composition. Ogden was 6’9” 345lbs. Orlando Pace was 6’7” 325 lbs though I beleive that’s his draft weight and he played closer to 335. Mailata, as you have mentioned.

Then there are quite a few pretty good OTs (some who split time at OG admittedly) Leonard Davis, Shawn Andrews, Zeus and Baby Zeus and McKinnie that had their flashes but IMO would have been lights out had they got their bodies into the shape of the.the first group.

The difference is the second group is sloppy. Kadyn Proctor is sloppy. He is unable to say yes to the difficult no’s and no to the tempting yeses. That is why I wouldn’t draft him. Betting on Krispy Kreme to become a body is my temple evangelist, and make no mistake with his genetics that is likely what it will take, is a sucker’s bet.

BUT, some of you all are vastly underestimating the impact that getting down to 335lbs would have on his game. If would help with his lateral agility, get off, transitions and most importantly, as we tend to forget, the drastic gains in fitness level is a force multiplier. Less drop off in play on long drives or throughout the game. Heck even less mental mistakes and missed assignments.

There are also techniques which he could deploy to firm up his outside shoulder. It of course then brings up whether he can handle high end pass rushers coming back across his face. But with his god given strength that might be a tradeoff worth considering. But that’s a whole different discussion.

Also, I think the Manu comps are unfair as Gio’s biggest problem is “which side is offense, coach?

The highs with Proctor him are incredibly impressive. I mean this is some Avengers stuff.

So while I’m out on Proctor it’s bc I don’t trust him off the field from a body/lifestyle perspective. I am also of the mindset that if he does become a my body is my temple evangelist then he’s probably an All Pro OT. I think he will go pretty high bc NFL decision makers have big egos and think they can fix him. To be honest I’m hoping he has a wild combine and becomes OT 2. Freeling and Proctor going before SiSi (is that right?) would be ideal.

Ogden is a good shout, I forgot about him because he never looked that big.

So I will add the caveat, if they don’t look like giant humans but are, maybe they can hit, because its speaks to a fleet-footedness that most won’t have.

Categorically untrue. I haven’t seen him in the top ten of ANY mock over the past 2 months.

I almost included the caveat that you still believe IF he can get his body to peak condition, and that is certainly possible. I admit I have a problem betting on guys who still need to get in shape and can be pretty dismissive of it overall. I just think if they were serious about it, they would have done it already (like Hollin Pierce). Instead, it looked to me like Proctor actually added weight this season. I just don’t want anything to do with that, admittedly.

I also forgot all about Ogden, he is another outlier. But there’s a reason I forgot… he didn’t look that big. He had a litheness to him that doesn’t scream giant OT to me… and probably explains his success, he had the fleet-footedness to actually play OT. Similar to Mims. I don’t think of Dan Skipper as a giant OT either.

I don’t think it’s fair to call Shawn Andrews a bust. Start of his career was really pretty good. But 370lb careers don’t last long.

I may just be splitting hairs bc I’m definitely not pro Proctor. It’s just entirely for the weight stuff which I view as a character issue.

Think of it this way. How much money did he potentially lose other guys bc he wasn’t able to say no to Krispy Kreme. If he’s a megastar everyone performs better and is thus compensated better. So there’s a selfishness to the gluttony.

I’ll take to my grave the belief that Andre Smith would have been awesome if he cared at about physical fitness. That dude’s run blocking in college. Oh my. Then we all saw the pro day titties and it was all downhill from there.
