Not a surprise. He wasn’t in the top 6 and with Rodrigo waiting in the wings, a victim of quality depth at the position.
There also seems to be a strategy of releasing certain guys early, so there’s a greater likelihood of them going unclaimed, so they can more easily be signed to the P.S. squad later.
I think it’s more of an act of respect. If they are released early, another team that is interested can have an opportunity to make a claim, then release someone else that may have been on the edge of making that team’s roster. I think the guys that you try to sneak onto the PS are the latest of cuts, and you hope they get lost in the blizzard of roster moves.
For example, if we release a WR like Meeks now, Minnesota is desperate and may claim Meeks. If the Lions release Meeks tomorrow at 3pm, there will be a ton of WR’s all hitting the market at once. That will keep Minnesota distracted and having more options to sift through, and give Meeks a better shot of making it through waivers and then resign to the practice squad.
Give him time to find a team to get signed to. If not hes welcome back to the PS. He IS an “OG” if you will. Been on and off with the team since 2019. 5th longest tenure on the active roster.
Only behind Decker, GG, Skipp, and Kennedy JUST ahead of FOX
I am glad they are not keeping 3 QB’s on the roster. I’d rather go heavy at another depth critical position like a lineman or DB.
Dan Campbell spelled it out before the last preseason game, when he said that he just couldn’t trust Hooker. If Dan Campbell says he can’t trust you, you aren’t making the roster.
