Lions draft Texas Tech DT Skyler Gill-Howard at 205

Yep. He can hang his hat on that first step and violent hands. Those will earn him a roster spot at least.

Sounds like a similar player to Navy’s Landon Robinson.

I like this pick. I live in Big 12 country and when Gill-Howard got hurt, it showed on the field right away. TTU’s defense was not as dominant as it was with him (they suffered their only in season loss the first week he was missing). He is definitely a penetrating tackle who I think will see the field on obvious passing downs. Very violent hands and more to the point for the Lions, he does not take plays off. Great motor and excellent technique. He will pass Wingo on the depth chart, IMO. I can see him platooning with McNeil keeping a fresh tackle on the field at all times.

He is, yeah. All 3Ts. I had Robinson a little higher, but SGH is a little bigger, and his hands are probably a little more violent.

One thing I noticed is that he does a really good job of keeping track of where the ball is. He doesn’t get lost in the chaos.

Not a draft expert but I am confused with this write up. In the article it says that he is “explosively athletic” but his RAS score is low

I think Brad is killing it on Day 3!

Yeah great point actually, and that’s a hugely underrated aspect of playing DT. One of my biggest issues with Walter Nolen last year was he often lost the ball.

This team loves their consistent progression guys

The RAS isn’t the be-all end-all of athleticism, just watch the tape. He’s easily beating dudes off the snap. He was injured late, may have tried to test anyway (that’s the sort of person he is). EDIT: right, missed the last half of the season as @HiFidelity points out.

I also see SGH playing off the center defending field goal attempts. His penetration ability should show up on the special teams.

I wonder what the numbers say, will have to dig into it on @CuriousHusker’s site (if he’s got kick blocking #s in there yet). You’d think the short arms would hurt him, but Cashius Howell was a fiend blocking passes and he basically has the arms of a ten-year-old kid.

I went looking for it, twice.

After I saw this, I went a third time and it’s pinned. I don’t know what to think?

Been there the whole time my man

At his size, most NFL starting centers and guards shouldn’t have a problem with him. Drafted this late however he is obviously worth a shot. I was disappointed since I was hoping for a safety somewhere in this draft.

Abney will probably play a lot of nickel/slot corner/safety. And hey, maybe it’s a good sign?

RAS is not a clear definer for DT’s period.

If you know the secret password Curious is doing a lot of live streams too. :joy: sometimes he even wears pants

Great info thanks

Of the first 4 DT’s that were taken in this draft only #1 had a RAS over 4. 2 and 3 didn’t qualify because they wouldn’t test and 4, Lee Hunter, had an RAS of 3.72, I’m done checking because it is a fact for DT’s that RAS isn’t a qualifier.
