My vote: yes, no question he should be re-signed. Whether he makes the 2025 roster is another question.
I believe there are a number of players the team is willing to move on from. Some that not all of us will agree with.
Skipper, on the other hand, is a guy that Dan said earned the OT3 spot last year. Not just earned a spot, but earned the OT3 spot. For his price and eagerness to leave it all out there, and relationship with Fraley and the gang… there’s really no reason at all to not bring him back. Nobody is going to confuse him with a starter. It’s possible AG and Ben will value him higher than Detroit does. Tanner/Heiden and Ben are all quite familiar with him and I could see them being willing to pay a premium. If they’re willing to pay 10+ % more than Detroit, good on him! We’ll bring Manu along for a similar role.
Honestly depends on where Manu is in his development.
I think he’ll be back with a fair pay raise. Skip has a valuable role as an extra blocker and he played well enough at LT to keep the line from falling apart when Decker was out. Dan also values him as a culture guy who has an infectious intensity on the field and in the locker room.
He does, but that hasn’t stopped them from cutting him a bunch of times already. They’re cutthroat when it comes to the roster, which to me is a great thing.
He’s a player I could see Ben or AG go after due to versatility he offers. Not a ridiculous contract but one that Detroit may not want to match.
Yep. 100 percent. Teams don’t carry 3 left tackles on a 53 man roster very often. If Manu has improved as much as the coaches said he has, Skipper might be the odd man out. I think we sign Skipper cheap and let Manu and Skipper battle it out in training camp. Skipper aint gonna cost much on a 1 year deal. Might even be able to get Skipper on the practice squad if needed. He’s been cut about 15 times.
I think if we let Skipper hit the market he’ll be with the Bears sooner than later.
It would be nice to be FORCED to move on from Skipper, because someone younger has passed him. Until then?
there’s no downside in keeping him at 1.5M. I mean we’re not going to find someone better in free agency at that price.
My guess is the Jets with Heiden and Engstrand would value his presence at least as much as Ben, if not more.
Right but, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…”, would be different going from your OC to work for a DC when you’re an OL player.
Skipper may earn a larger contract elsewhere. He’s a fan favorite but 2024 is over.
Brad will make the best decisions he can for the 2025 Lions.
Not until he scores a 60 yard td from the WR position against the Bears
You know that WR shit that we pulled with him vs Dallas is some of the most classic FU in NFL history.
It’s a competition, not a popularity contest.
The best players play.
He makes the team as OT3/4 and TE 3.
Manu may be able to pass him on the depth chart, but likely not knock him off the roster altogether.
Line him up at FB for a few plays just to mess with teams.
Dude is 6-8. Put him in the middle on kick block units.
He’ll probably get re-signed if it’s for the right price and will be in a battle with Manu for the OT3 spot. Nothing is going to be given to Skip or Manu. If Skip is better, he’ll be the OT3. If not, he’ll likely be a cut and Manu will be the guy.
I have said this about 10 times… I will never understand why Fipp doesn’t do this. Skipper was a kick blocking machine in college. Had 7 career blocks at Arkansas.
How a reporter hasn’t asked Fipp about this in a presser I have no idea? ![]()
