Lions hire ex-Dolphins GM Chris Grier as a personnel executive

The old names are SO amazing.

There’s a running bit with Craig, DK and Heifetz over at the Ringer with old names. I forget if they draft teams of them or simply do polls or what, but there I remember there were some doozies.

Shane Gillis does a funny Jackie Robinson bit when he references the ridiculous old name as well.

I think his draft classes were bad.. looking back year after year.. again his few good picks he traded away.. His best draft class might have been 2021 with Waddle, Jaelen phillips, Jevon Holland, etc and none of them even play for the team anymore. his classes going back..

and honestly some of his drafts going back look much worse. In 2020 he had 3 first round picks and he took Tua over Herbert (seemingly against his coach) and 2 busts.

In 10 years of being gm the dolphins went through 3 head coaches made the playoffs only 3 times (all wc) and never won a playoff game. They also finished below .500 4 times. Its amazing he kept his job with that record. He also hired adam gase and fired Brian Flores after he had saved him from being fired. This all puts him dangerously close to bob quinn type territory.

Honestly I don’t really care, he’s just a small executive on our team.. I just think its odd that he is viewed positively by a lot of the board.

The early turnaround was from his own 3 years of disaster after hiring adam gase. I don’t think he should get credit for turning them around for a minute after he had been the one to tank them.

That’s an excellent point except for the pesky fact that it’s not really true. Tannehill has a catastrophic knee injury in 2016. They’re rolling Matt Moore out there at QB, They went full Matt Moore. You never go full Matt Moore. Go look at that 2015 roster that he inherited from Dennis Hickey and get back to me. Who is Dennis Hickey? That’s the point. Nobody remembers bc his brief time as GM was a complete catastrophe. And Jeff Ireland’s late reign drafts also did the organization no favors as well.

You vibed an opinion out there that wasn’t really well thought out. I get it. It’s a message board. I’m sympathetic. I do it all the time. The mistake isn’t the message board vibing it’s the doubling and tripling down on the poorly researched and thought out take.

With Grier and Dorsey we sure do have a ton of GM experience in the room.

I liked the rule when it first came out. But I think it’s past the essence of it’s usefulness for inspiring minority hiring.

I think this as about as useful in the NFL as the rule anymore.

Equine ā€œBeansā€ (Sheath Cleaning)

In horse care, a ā€œbeanā€ refers to a hard, compressed pebble of waxy skin oils (smegma) and debris that lodges inside a male horse’s (gelding’s) sheath or urethra. [1, 2]

  • The Problem: These beans can grow up to the size of a human palm. If left alone, they can cause extreme discomfort, alter the horse’s behavior, and potentially block their urethra, making it impossible to urinate. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Removal: Equine caretakers and veterinarians routinely clean the horse’s sheath (often 1-2 times a year) using warm water and specialized cleansers to safely remove these blockages. [1, 2]

Interesting connection. Grier and Campbell were together for 6 years in Miami.

Yep, and Grier passed him over (after an excellent run as interim coach) to hire Gase. So at least we know Dan is over that, though I doubt he ever really held a grudge to begin with. Not really wired that way.

Plus he needed those 5 years with Sean Payton anyways

When one door closes ….!

To be fair Gase was damn near Ben Johnson at that time.

Right it wasn’t seen as crazy at the time, especially with the Manning endorsement. This wasn’t like the Jets hiring Gase. It was just wrong in the end.

I believe, this guy also didn’t hire Dan Campbell?

Pretty funny that it was Grier that decided to go with Adam Gase instead of keeping Dan Campbell as HC in 2016

Gase was a hot name at the time. Dan Campbell had never been a hot name. I’ll freely admit I was wrong about the Campbell hire.

Leader of men vs hot coordinator candidate is always tough. Thank God we got it right for once.

Dan wasn’t really all that hot of a name even when we hired him, and that’s after several years as an assistant HC under Sean Payton.

MCDC did not have that latter experience when the Dolphins were hiring.

True, he’s been great, but you can’t apply hindsight to situations hiring Gase over Campbell.
