Lions Injury Updates: Arnold, Zeitler, O’Connor, Rakestraw, Davis, Barnes

If you don’t want to read anything or watch:

Good news:
DMo (Expected back)
Zeitler & Arnold (outcomes better than expected, not 100% sure they play, but good news)
Rakestraw (trending in right direction, could come back at some point)

Bad news:
CD3 & Barnes not expected to return this year.
Pat O’Connor

Same news:
If anyone is gonna return from that injury early, it’s Hutch. You can’t count him out.

The CD3 news was the most surprising to me. DC seemed quite definite in saying that he and Barnes are NOT coming back.

I wonder about the exact nature of Davis’ jaw injury such that he is out for the season. The injury was weeks ago and the Super Bowl is still almost another 5 weeks away. Does it really take that long for a jaw to heal? :man_shrugging:

I really think it’s all the other stuff that comes along with it. He won’t be getting an NFL diet through a straw, so no way will his body be ready to go when his jaw is. Even if the jaw is ready by the SB.

Also, if you come back to early from a knee injury you may ruin your career. If you come back from a major jaw injury too early you may ruin your chances of living a normal life.

Not really about that. As @CuriousHusker that can be life-altering if not properly healed.

As for football, his jaw is wired shut. Nothing you can put through a straw to keep muscle mass and memory. Breaking your jaw creates a body-wide effect. It’s like breaking an ankle and you’re stuck in a cast in bed for 8 weeks. You’ll laugh at your calf muscle once they take that thing off.

you’d think these days you could blend up anything in a vitamix into a pureé and serve it through a straw

Definitely still get tons of calories and protein blending things up. That aint the issue. It’s possibly snapping his jaw again that’s the problem.

What about a rakestraw? Can you serve it through a rakestraw?

Asking for @Jman

The O’Connor one is a bummer, if nothing else because he was already the bottom of the barrel we were scraping, and I think he was making the most of his moments. Be great if some veterans became available for this stretch …

Jaw is needed to bite knee cap

I was hoping against all hope that Davis could be back for the NFC Championship so that sucks. I never believed Hutch was coming back, I think there’s a lot of wishful thinking going on there. Same with Barnes, that just seems so far fetched that he’d be back.

The Terrion news is a big relief, that would have been a disastrous loss considering the state of the secondary and obviously DMont is big news, need that big boy back in the playoffs and Zeitler of course, need that offensive line intact. Thank the lord that they earned this bye week, couldn’t have come at a better time.

If he needed it surgically wired shut, 3-6 months

Just my take….

The Lions do not plan on breaking the bank for either CD3 or Barnes… urging them to return before they are truly ready as they enter free agency isn’t fair, and our style.

They’ve permitted AG and Ben to seek new jobs during the bye. This team has a heart.

It could also be that they simply aren’t ready, but AA likely wasn’t ready, DMO likely isn’t READY, and Hutch saf won’t be ready…. They are lifers here though.

Truthfully, when I played football my head was an extension of every thing I did and every jolt I delivered or took on the playing field.

If you block, your head and neck get engaged. If you try to deliver a blow running the ball every time you’re tackled, you often pull your head into your shoulder to stiffen your body and prepare for the contact or lay some wood.

If you’re on D fk it. You’re head and neck are engaging every time you try to tackle someone.

The forces your shoulder or body takes comes back to your neck, head and jaw. The side of your helmet is also going to move and take impact and transfer forces to your jaw. There’s no way around it.

I’m not a doctor, but regardless of the calorie thru a straw argument I think this is much simpler than that. It just seems to me that whether it’s wired shut or not your jaw is likely to get really fk’d up on every single down until it’s fully healed. :man_shrugging:

Thank you sir you are a gentleman and a scholar

Have we heard any updates on players yet?

Also with the matchup being Washington and they sucks against run defense do you hold Dmont out another week? Or is he as healthy as he will every be until he gets that knee surgically cleaned up?

Monty could’ve played last week… He’ll be dressed for this game. How many touches he gets is another story… I’d guess 10-12 runs
