The Lions have named their 2025 captains. There are no surprises.
Quarterback Jared Goff and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson lead the way. Other captains are veteran receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, tackle Penei Sewell, linebacker Alex Anzalone, and linebacker Grant Stuard.
Since it was a Florio article, I decided not to post a link.
Was hoping to see the team captain box checked showing growing leadership in our young MLB. Doesn’t mean he isnt growing in that space would have just been a bit of an indicator for me from the outside that the players view him as their leader. It isnt a big deal that he isn’t team captain, that was where my comment stems from though.
Oh you’re good bud. I see several guys on defense that could be future captains and leaders. Jack, Branch, Kerby, Alim to name a few. Great problem to have.
The players vote…. Anzalone has mentored Barnes and Jack for several years now, they love him. Just listen to their press conferences. Of course he won the vote. he’s mentored most of the defense.
Anzalone is the most important player on defense not named Hutch IMO
That’s a fun question: who’s the Lions’ 2nd-most important defensive player. Lots of defensible choices, including TA, Branch, Campbell..
But I’m going with Davenport. To be honest, his career stats do not inspire confidence. 24 sacks in 69 games? OTOH, he had one outstanding year stats-wise (9 sacks in 11 games!) and, by all accounts, showed very well in camp. He also looked good in his 2 games last year. If he can bring it like that for 14+ regular season games AND be healthy for the playoffs…. NOICE!
Thank you. Florio and Simms are both morons. Florio still spouts off daily that John Wohlford is a better QB than Goff, because supposedly the rams little napoleon coach guy started Wohlford. He fails to mention that Goff had a broken thumb. Just one little detail he leaves out of his story.
They also predict huge regression for Goff, and that Ben Johnson was he only reason Goff has had a decent couple of years. These are the same guys that said Cam Newton was a better QB than Goff, literally one week before he was cut from New England in favor of Mac Jones.
It may be because he’s a “me first” kind of player… Not saying he’s a bad teammate or anything like that… But he admitted to focusing on individual accolades, like being all pro. Just a guess
By important I mean not just his performance but him being the defensive captain and getting everyone lined up properly and making all the calls. Plus his mentorship of Barnes and Jack. When he went out the defense took a noticeable decline in mental mistakes. Especially not being able to cover rb’s or tight ends was glaring.
6 games prior to his injury we gave up 16 points per game
6 games he missed after his injury we gave up 26 points per game
I know Jack Campbell is taking over the defensive play calling but when Alex was out last year the defense struggled. Alex was kinda like another coach on the field for AG the past few seasons. Don’t get me wrong I don’t wanna lose Branch or Kerby either. But I think Alex is very important on and off the field.
