I don’t get this thread. First off the interviews are virtual. Second, do we honestly believe Dan hasn’t prepared these guys ahead of time. I sincerely doubt either of them are doing any last minute prep work.
Also, the league set the terms for these interviews, not the team. If we didn’t allow our guys to interview they’d just be at a disadvantage, we don’t treat staff like this. That’s how you end up getting a bad rep and not being able to recruit high quality replacements.
Yeah I see interviews at this time as being on Zoom or similar. I can’t believe BJ or AG are flying around the country right? They got shit to do.
If I was either of these guys I would not prepare one bit. I would look at the call as a Zoom meet and greet to gauge mutual interest from both parties (not just the hiring side) and I would expect the Interviewer to treat it that way.
From the interviewer’s standpoint, they understandably want to land “their available guy” first so if you don’t contact a guy you’re interested in then he has no way of knowing that giving others to make that impression. Personally as an interviewer, I’d go in NOT wanting to tie up a guy that I want to hire and make my best impression on the interviewEE by respecting the situation. If I was an interviewEE i’d be suspect of an organization that doesn’t prioritize the time constraints of my current situation
To me the point of the thread was to be informative, not the question the merit of the timing of the interviews (which is why I posted the Seattle info too). I know that’s the way some people took it, but I was simply pleased to be informed.
The interview has to be remote, Zoom or Teams, per NFL policy. I also imagine the interview meeting wouldn’t last more than an hour per meeting. They could then schedule onsite follow ups after the Divisional round of games.
Heres the apparent verbiage that went into effect for this 2024 calendar year…
The official head coach interview resolution’s anti-tampering policy as announced by the league reads as follows:
"Prohibit clubs from conducting in-person Head Coach interviews with candidates who are employed by other NFL clubs until after the conclusion of all Divisional Playoff games.
I’m sure this is just the initial ‘get to know you’ conversation requiring very little preparation. Similar to any interview process I’ve been through, where I meet first with the recruiter, followed by individual and panel interviews, which do require preparation. Highly doubt the NFL, Lions, or Ben would want to distract from an important week.
Obviously this is the NFL so instead of a recruiter, it may be the owner/GM.
Yep, that’s exactly what I thought as well, which is why I had to look it up. I thought teams could only reach out for HC prospects from teams that were either on a wildcard bye or on the 2 week break after the conference championships.
This is my thought as well. Nobody is going to get too cute and fancy. And my guess is if they tried, Ben would simply say “sorry bit more on the plate at the moment; we can talk after the season”.
Understanding who you would want on your staff isn’t a huge deal for a guy that has aspirations to be a head coach some day. As many other guys have said, “what you would do” as a head coach is something that is constantly going thru your mind. Heck, even fans who have zero aspirations to be an NFL coach or GM do it. “If I were in that position, here is what I would do.”
What I wonder is how the interview process is being handled by our guys and the teams conducting the interviews. I have heard head coaches say that some interviews seem like casual conversations about football while others seem like a grueling interrogation. Flipping it to how our guys are handling it, are they pulling a Jim Caldwell? If you remember, Caldwell stood out in his interviews because he studied every single throw the teams QB had ever made in the NFL. He took notes and he outlined a plan. On that note, what if the film study of other teams gives our guys some cool wrinkles to put into this week’s gameplan?
My understanding of these interviews is that they’re brief, and they’re mostly introductions, potentially getting into a ‘philosophy’ convo, but most importantly, whether to gauge whether the interest is mutual.
i.e. Ben saying, “I have a place in mind, it’s not Washington” or “Yes, let’s pick this conversation back up after we win the Super Bowl.”
The idea that Ben is somehow distracted is 10000000% a misnomer and a misunderstanding of how this works.
That does raise an interesting question. How is that arbitrated? Just by looks? Sherman-Moore paint strips? It can’t be by self-identification. There must be some qualifying written standard.
