The well is deep !
We got a zillion… Interesting how many start with St. Brown. He laterals, passes, reverses…etc. St.Brown drop kick field goal coming soon. Doug Flutie style
Put them all on tape, give defenses lots of things to worry about.
Bring Jack Fox in at WR… Put him in motion presnap then watch how fast the defense burns their timeouts.
This was my thought exactly. The announcers kept talking about saving them for when you need them, but to me this was the perfect game to put a bunch of them out there. Trick plays are, by nature, “high risk, high reward” plays.
If your team is struggling, if you think they need a spark or are simply overmatched, converting on a trick play can provide a significant boost. They can extend drives, put points on the board, but they can do the same for the other team if they’re unsuccessful. Most coaches therefore only really go to them if they feel they need to.
Campbell (and also Johnson, don’t know how much to attribute to one vs the other) really flipped the script in this game, and to me it was brilliant (remember when players talked about how underrated Campbell’s intelligence is). If you believe that these are “high risk, high reward,” then it makes sense to use them if you think you need to take some chances, based either on how your team is playing or if you think you’re overmatched (think Lions teams a few years ago). It also makes sense to use them, for the exact reason you said, if your team has a comfortable lead and you’re confident that you’re going to win. You can tolerate those risks, not because you need the immediate reward, but for the long term benefits.
The Lions just put a bunch of stuff on tape showing teams they need to account for every player on the field at all times. They also just put multiple offensive lineman in positions to make plays and score touchdown, which I imagine doesn’t hurt morale in that room.
I’d trust St. Brown to catch and hold a nuclear bomb. He just has really sure hands
Catching a nuke would be must see TV
