What’s sad is, where I once saw 11-6 as this teams easy outcome, I now 1-16 as a very real possibility.
It’s hard to win with two out of three practice squad receivers, and the other your kick returner.
I don’t understand why Hock isn’t at the top of these lists I’ve been seeing.
Thinking I must be missing something?
Box Score - Cowboys Game:
Seems like the Lions could possibly get something in return for a guy they’re not going to (or shouldn’t) resign? I’m sure some teams out there would love to add Hock now to help throughout the rest of the season and extend him without needing to compete for him in FA?
Swift is a solid potential trade target. I’m happy if we keep him bc we need playmakers, but I’m also happy if we can trade him for decent value and rebuild the RB position in FA + the draft this year. His injury history makes me 50/50 on keeping him tbh.
The rest of that list is a bit ridiculous. No one is trading for any of those guys.
Who is going to trade for Brockers?!
Nobody!
Swift…I could go either way. Love the guy …when he’s healthy (about 1/3 of the time).
IMO, RB is a pretty massive way we could upgrade
The only chance would be if we were willing to pay 90% of his salary. Perhaps a team with injuries might take him for peanuts. If you are a healthy scratch for the worst defense in the NFL, how good can you be!?
I would be careful on how those stats are used, I believe Wright caught all those passes in 2 TE sets where the Cowboys were shying towards Hocks side. I am by no means saying we resign Hock at some huge amount but if we can resign him to a friendly deal then having both Wright and Hock has proven successful when they are both on the field
I’m with you! Hock is not an all pro… but he’s decent. He’s currently 6th for TE’s in receiving yards and tied for 3rd in TD’s this year.
Yea, I get all the negativity around him because of where the lions drafted him. So expectations are he should be a Kelce type TE for us. But in reality he is producing and we are not going to replace him with anything better, so if the $$'s work then you resign him.
for sure, if he was a 3rd round pick everyone would be very happy with him, his draft status is the main reason for all the criticism he gets. Drafting a tight end in the top 10 is a real dumb strategy, but he didn’t draft himself.
I fear he will get very expensive though, and at that point you might want to move on. He’s still under contract through 2023 though, no rush on decisions.
Usually a thumbs up would suffice, but I think you practically read my mind with this post. Trade Hock. And trade Brockers? Yeah, sure, and win the mega millions while you’re at it.
No. You don’t. You don’t put over 10M per in a TE because “you can’t get any better.” You just put commensurate investment into the position based on how you utilize it. If Hock was catching 8-12 balls per game every game, it would be one thing. But we don’t use him like that. It’s going to be the Swift, Jamo and St.Brown show, so invest the money elsewhere and get by with a TE with lesser ability. Like Mitchell and Wright.
Investing in Swift would be the dumbest thing the Lions could possibly do. RB’s on 2nd contracts almost never work and he can’t even stay healthy on his rookie deal.
Hocks in a weird spot i feel like rn
He has shown up in a couple games this year (Dallas game he was 2nd or 3rd highest rated player, he had some solid blocks that i noticed that game, Seattle game)
He still struggles with Run Blocking, and his receiving game is inconsistent, but he also has been shown to make some critical plays aswell
Hes def not worth that 1st round pick but he isnt the
worst option, and he should garner some attention on the trade market
I didn’t say invest $10M in to Hock did I? Show me where I said that. I said if the numbers work, that means the lions and Hock to agree to a team friendly deal where the team can still invest in the other positions needed. But what I do find funny is the mention of Swift when the guy can’t even stay on the field from more than 2 games in a row, so you thing that is a good use of $$'s?
Also to note (prolly not the topic)
Dolphins just lost their starting safety to an ACL tear
they literally have 6-7 injuries in that secondary
healthy ARSB and somewhat swift, games looking like a shootout
this offense…
In the first few games they were cruising and I think even surprised themselves how effective they were. Everything looked in sync and crisp
then came Seattle and they looked like they were playing both well and angry. Goff was throwing with authority and velocity. I have little doubt that if we recovered the onside kick we would have scored again and won
But during the Pats and Dallas games they looked like they have basically given up. Sleepwalking. I think some of this falls on Campbell. The team is personifying his high and low persona….a coach who has both shed tears and ranted at the podium
The offense is a living personification of what it’s like when too drink 20 espressos. Energy, a peak then a crash….And it’s not especially healthy
Presently, the Lions have eight 2023 draft picks.
Their own in Rounds 1 through 6, plus the Rams 1st and the Broncos 6th Rd pick (as part of the Trinity Benson trade).
Other than dumping Brockers, who is worthless on the field, I don’t see the Lions getting enough compensation in trade for anyone proposed.
I would try and trade Hock for a 2025 1st.
I’m fine not investing heavily in Swift, because you are right. But just sub out Swift with fill in the blank, second round pick investment dual threat back who will get a high volume of touches in this offense, with this QB. JD McKissic would be getting more action as a starter than Hock does, except the one game where we had no WR’s up.
My point is there ARE offenses where it’s ok to invest heavily in your TE. Pay Mark Andrews. Pay Kelce. DON’T pay Hock in THIS offense. All I’m saying and none of Hocks numbers justify putting a larger share of cap into. He MAY be good enough in the right situation to earn that kind of dough. IF we are going to change our offense to lead with our TE in the passing game. Then cool. Given what I see from this staff, we just invested a 4th round draft pick to replace Hock when we let him walk. We’re going to live in 3 WR formations with lots of motion and eye candy. Mitchell will be fine for that role and Wright for the most part will be ok too. Once we get Swift, Jamo and St. Brown to the party, I do not believe we will see justification in a big money contract to any TE.
