Lions Roster After Day Two of the Draft

As many of you know I am big on not starting rookies overall. Great teams have few rookie starters overall. Here is the rough roster after day two of the draft:

QB- Goff, Hooker, a 3rd guy?
RB- Gibbs, Monty, Reynolds, Vaki…a 5th if we want one.
TE- LaPorta, Brock Wright, Zystra I believe.
OL- Decker, Mahogany, Ragnow, Glasgow, Tate Ratledge, Sewell, Manu, Skipper and Awokisa/Niese/Sorsdal if we want one more. 9 or 10 guys.
WR- St. Brown, Jameson, Tim Patrick, Kalif Raymond and Isacc Teslaa. 5 guys.

That is 23 guys who are making this roster roughly.

On D:
DL: Hutch, Davenport, Paschal, Reader, McNeil, Wingo, Levi, Muhammad, Tyleik Williams, Lopez, Myles Adams/BroMart/Pat O’connor…that is 9+ legit guys and fringe guys. IR will play a role with Alim and Wingo. Call it 10.
LBer- Campbell, Anzalone, Barnes, Rodrigo, then 1/2 depth guys, Grant Stuard. Likely 5 guys total.
CB- DJ Reed, Arnold, Amik Robertson, Rakestraw and pick a 5th one as we have competition there. Likely 5 guys.
Safety- Branch, Joseph…need two bodies here. Avonte Maddox might slot here. This is a need. Likely keep 4 total.

That would ne likely 24 guys…1/2 safeties are unknown.

3 specialists are set now. That is 50 guys who have roughly clear roster paths. Wow. Yep, some drama but not much at this point. 3rd and 4th safety.

It appears the Lions have 2 6th rd. picks and 3 7th rd. picks. PLENTY of ammo to move around. Then we have UDFAs to scour. This Lions team is getting better and better meaning this roster is harder and harder to make. Holmes is making moves around specific guys overall who likely have a roster shot here meaning specific traits and skills they covet. I am not al att worried about the trades for Teslaa. I like the player and draft picks were high to give up but I am looking at the larger Lions roster and the moves made to fill out this roster.

Isn’t Kyle Allen still on the roster?

Beautiful. In case anybody is wondering why Brad is like F them picks and trading like a madman. We running out of places to put em. Especially if we sign guys like Z and Hernandez.

Right. The roster is getting better and more complete every year. Roster spots are being filled up.

This roster has guys in development in a lot of spots: Manu, Vaki, BroMart, Sorsdal, now Teslaa, Wingo, Mahogany. Rodrigo played early as the team was bad. Now? Rodrigo would struggle to make this roster as a rookie. Some of these guys will be starters and they will contribute. That is awesome. Some will be cut as that is competition.

This is how I see it:

Did we have 7 Lbers make the opening day roster last year?

Okay. The Lions OG Frasier, edge Hassanein and then two Bulldogs in safety Dirty Dan Jackson and experienced slog WR Dominic Lovett.

Frazier is making this roster. With out lack of safety depth Dan Jackson has a real shot here too. His experience at Georgia on special teams and then as a starting strong safety gives him a path.

Lovett has a shot to be the 6th WR. Likely outside looking in. Nice player in the competition mix.

Hassanein is interesting. At edge we have Hutch, Davenport and Josh Paschal. Barnes can rush the passer from the edge. Then Muhammad then Hassanein. What if we bring back Z. Smith.

I can see 5 edge players easy. Can Hassanein be one of those? IF Smith comes back the top four are clear: Hutch, MD, Paschal and Smith. With Smith back I think the Lions can afford to let Muhammad go and Hassanein doesn’t dress on game days. Muhammad back on PS.

Without Smith Muhammad is more valuable. Hassanein might not make it to the PS. Interesting.

Gonna be hard for any UDFA to make this club now.

That’s the problem with Edge. Once we got past whoever the trade up option was they didn’t feel like there was an obvious upgrade over what we have.

But next year we’re going to need reinforcements for sure.

The way that Brad talked about Jackson and Lovett on special teams suggests that they’ll make the squad OG they are who we think they are.

Meeks is absolutely going to make the PS. To be honest if he’s awesome the fact that both Teslaa and Lovett are likely on teams allows us to potentially carry another WR. I expect that in camp it will become apparent that at least for 2025 Meeks is better Tim Patrick insurance than Teslaa.

Uphill battle for Meeks but he’s a really good player and could easily develop into a cheap version of our in breaker merchant for a few years.

I think Prieskorn has a chance to impress as well. And I think Mason Miller is a likely PS candidate bc of his extreme versatility.
