Lions select DE Derrick Moore at #44

A less than flattering analysis from WalterFootball:

Detroit Lions Detroit Lions: Derrick Moore, DE, Michigan – MILLEN DON’T FORGET YOUR KIELBASA FOR KIELBASA DAY Grade
Yuck. I thought the Lions were going to trade up for Zion Young or Gabe Jacas. All of these talented edge rushers seemed like the Lions were going to fall to the Lions at No. 50. Yet, they moved up six spots for … Derrick Moore? The Michigan edge rusher was productive in school, but he’s undersized, so I definitely ranked him behind the other edge rushers. Horrible!

  1. Baltimore Ravens Baltimore Ravens: Zion Young, DE, Missouri – A+ Grade
Here’s the player the Lions should have drafted. The Ravens, instead, land yet another steal, which is what they do every single year because other teams don’t know how to draft. Young is extremely talented and easily could have gone in the first round. He has character concerns, but nothing nearly as egregious as Makai Lemon.”

You will be able to find plenty of people who don’t like the pick, just like others can find plenty of people who do. This was his range :man_shrugging:. I’m also fairly certain Minter (who coached him at Michigan) was gonna take him, which is why they took so long to pick Young.

Good news is, is that it cant be much worse :man_shrugging:

Oh, I know that. I have been a draft nut for many decades, despite the numbskulls who were drafting for the Lions. I’m just posting it as information. We’ll find out if Holmes was right or Edholm. I’ll bet on Holmes.

He will excel as Hutch is double teamed That why AQM had a decent year.

There were for sure plenty who weren’t as high on Moore (or Miller). But others who were far higher than consensus as well. Generally you don’t see such wide ranges, clearly we know which side Brad was on. And the fact that it happens to coincide with our biggest needs (this draft lined up really well on that front) is a major bonus.

Strengths

  • Good size and length as a rusher.
  • Leveraged hand strike and leg drive propel his bull rush.
  • Downhill momentum is hard to stop once it starts.
  • Gets into the top of the rush with good forward lean.
  • Swallows quarterbacks and runners like a crashing wave once he’s close.
  • Above-average football IQ and awareness of play design.
  • Capable of holding his ground at the point of attack.
  • Plays with a smooth connection between his hands and feet.

Weaknesses

  • Occasionally lacks energy and urgency as a run defender.
  • Rides on blocks instead of working quickly off of them.
  • Average quickness to stack, shed and pursue to the sideline.
  • Below-average first-step quickness in his upfield rush.
  • Limited hand counters cause rush to sputter if he fails to gain early advantage.
  • Lacks knee bend and upper-body swivel while working the turn.

That is why I loved the pick! It meets a glaring need and I have no doubt he is a high character guy as Brad only drafts HC guys.

Keep in mind that Moore doesn’t have to be the man. He’s in a supporting role.

I love the pick. Now get a LB

Ok thanks.
Not super stoked about losing a pick but i guess thats what you have to do to move up.

I was thinking more like we’d be using one of those 4th’s and a 5th and 6th to move back up into the 3rd round. Still need a Safety and. Tight End.

Go get Kyle Louis and I think this board will be the most whelmed it has been after a draft in some time.

Could still do that.
