Lions select LB Jimmy Rolder at #118

I laughed but it doesn’t appear true. Played 43 career college games. Missed some time as a sophmore. Played 12 games in both 24 and 25

That’s a little bit exaggerated haha. You have to hit on a day 3 guy or 2 every year. Maybe not as starters but solid contributors.

It’s not quite the crapshoot you are suggesting unless you are only referring to starters/pro bowlers.

Rolder, Boettecher, Fischer, KEO all in that same tier of day 3 LB for me.

Louis is in that Harold Perkins defensive player type prospect grouping .

Could’ve seen them late 3 or anytime day 3. Sub package players

It’s not an exaggeration at all. 60% of Day 3 guys aren’t even on the teams that they are drafted by within 4 years - meaning they don’t even finish out their contract. The average NFL career is shorter than 3 years. The chances of them becoming a long-term starter are less than 10%. Getting a guy who makes 2 All-Pro teams in their career from rounds 3-7 is less than a .5% chance. There are decades on data on this. There’s no need to exaggerate.

Fans just see the Top 1-5% (like Amon Ra) of the Day 3 picks are convinced that their GM is gonna be the guy who gonna hit on them consistently, surely.

Another solid addition to the D front 7….seems kind of like a reach, but he has a high ceiling. And at this rate, I’m gonna have honolulu maize n blue balls with all thes Mich guys!

There are far more people with the 2008 mindset than the 2026 mindset.

It’s not that they’re throw away picks. It’s just that the chance of success with them is incredibly low, so calling any of them a “reach” is somewhat absurd. They’re all reaches a this point.

I don’t know if you really read what I said…

And just because they aren’t signed to a second contract to the team that drafted them doesn’t mean they weren’t hits. I considered a Jimmy Rolder playing 30% snaps in a part time role with decent grades a hit. I don’t think people expect starter/stars on day 3.

Fair. This is a reasonable expectation. These guys are hopefully solid depth pieces. A lot of them won’t be, but a depth piece is a reasonable expectation.

I’m not always so sure about that. lol.

Definitely looks like a good tackler. Even if he’s a backup, should be a good special teamer

One great thing about the new era Lions is that they are great at developing players. This is why we are hitting above the league average on our draft picks. In that sense, you don’t draft where a guy is ranked, you draft based on what you think you have to work with.

Not a word on espn over Rolder

The absolute cringe over the past 3 presenters is breathtaking

ESPN has also done a horrible job of ranking players. They are so far more off this year than usual. I’m not sure I trust anything I see over there.

Guy if nothing else adds depth to the linebacker position and could be a beast on special teams. I like the idea that he is a sure tackler.

Just an observation. I used to be a draft nut and arm chair scouted guys that were going to go way past pick 118. I’m sure a lot of guys here still deep dive, and no way would be tipping the hat right now under another regime. (Perhaps rightly so as this staff has far superior results). I’ve been saying forever that the real draft strategy is not BPA. It’s fall in love and get that guy way before anyone else is a threat to “maybe” take them. The bell curve on this philosophy/ BH ego has been heading down, but we’ll see if this more of the same draft pays off.

I like addressing the first two positions. Like Miler, like Moore - and the staff obviously says those are our guys. All that can absolutely pay off. But we sure don’t seem to extract good value out of the front half of drafts (but many have exceeded expectations so….) We offset that at times with our later round gems. This year seems like the theme, more than the exception. But hey, I think we are better in two areas we were glaringly weak, so dilly dilly!
