I can’t believe a GM has never tried to increase their draft efficiencies by taking a player as late as possible. A novel idea.

Drew Boylhart had him as a early 3rd pick and possibly higher
If you believe him, we got good value getting him in the 4th and take a look who Drew uses as comparables.
Jimmy Rolder. LB. Michigan Jimmy has a burst and natural side-to-side gate that reminds me a lot of former #Panthers LB great Luke Kuechly. What do I mean by a side-to-side gate? His shoulders went side to side instead of up and down as if one leg was just a tad shorter than the other leg when he runs. This side-to-side shoulder motion makes it very hard for him to be blocked because, when the average player shakes their shoulders from side to side, they have to slow down or stop their feet. But Luke never had to stop his feet and would burst through a block rather than take on a block. It’s the same gate that made the #Bills Great special teams player Steve Tasker so hard to block. Watch Steve in films coming out of the tunnel, and you will see right away what I mean. Jimmy also has this natural gate that allows him to surprise blockers and go through them to make a tackle at full speed. Jimmy does not take on blocks very often, but when he does, the blocker is usually off balance because of this slight side-to-side shoulder movement. He is also a sure tackler. Jimmy has the size and speed to go sideline to sideline, making tackles, and naturally understands angles going forward to cut down RB’s and WR’s on sweeps and screens, making those flash tackles behind the line of scrimmage. As far as coverage, Michigan didn’t ask him to do anything more than dropping off into zone, but you can see on film that he doesn’t lack the overall athleticism to be average to better than average if need be. (IMO). Despite the fact that Jim hasn’t played the linebacker position as much as most others, he does not struggle with anticipating and seems to have the natural instincts to dissect plays happening in front of him immediately at the snap of the ball. Jimmy, at times, does not follow the script, which can make many coaches reluctant to trust him until trust has been built. In that area, he reminds me a lot of former #Steelers great Safety/DB Troy Polamalu. As you can see, Jimmy seems to remind me of former players who were all impact players, but also were a little unconventional. At first, he might piss off a lot of coaches and teammates who are more conventional in their thinking and play. I suspect that if you give Jimmy more responsibility on the field than he is used to or has had in the past, you will see him mature very quickly when the weight of his teammates’ play, along with his own, is put on his shoulders. If his interviews get a team as excited as I am about Jimmy, I think he might be selected earlier than his talent grade suggests and play like the wolverine he is.

Again, generally I would be with you completely, but things need to be standardized as much as possible, and there’s just no way of doing that here. It’s an interesting note and something I always check, but for me the statistical significance is in how historically INaccurate the mocks/etc… leading up to the draft actually is. Why is that? To me you first have to address that discrepancy before then making these sort of comparisons.

You can’t quantify a player’s heart. You can’t quantify a player’s capacity to improve technically. You can’t quantify a player’s capacity to learn a complex NFL scheme well enough that they don’t have to think about it.
Analytics would say that Tom Brady wasn’t even worth drafting at 199.
When it gets this deep in the draft, your average mock drafter or big board creator hasn’t even done 5% of the work that each NFL front office has done on every prospect. Draft media is also copying each other’s homework at this point.
If 32 NFL front offices don’t pick a player then he hasn’t fallen in the draft, draft media was straight wrong.

Oh I think the data THEY have is much better than anything public. And I think Brad has been pretty good with it. He was right about TeSlaa and I think he was right about Derrick Moore too. Nailed their spots based on the rumors they were both coming off the board a pick later, despite the consensus boards saying they went way too high
this is a meh pick for me, i just hope he is a solid player
I think the big part some are missing , is with all that said and no matter what the stats says , it’s the teams that do get these types of things right more are the better teams and the guy that win the Superbowl. According to some you might as well have a 2 rd draft because the is rest is just a gamble.

I don’t mind this pick at all. I thought after day 2 the linebacker class dropped dramatically. Yeah Louis was on the board, but I think Rolder can play the position much more traditionally. I’m interested to see how he does in coverage.

They say he’s fine in zone, but needs work in man.
I think we’ll be playing more zone this year. I don’t know I could be wrong on that.

[/quote] we all are different than the man that makes the picks, we act different, think different, the drafts are different, every single prospect is different, as are our needs per season. so we will never ‘know’ because The draft is ever evolving as are the teams, we can’t possibly figure it all out, we are football fans that hope each year our team finds some quality in the drafts , and -in turn wins more games. we hope we know what we see and read and learn about these prospects each season BUT we will all have different opinions about how good or bad they are-always , to.
Excellent pick, great value getting him in the 4th as well.
I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t end up being a solid contributor for the Lions
